Am I the last person still running an OC'd Celeron 300A?

by Tony Jeste » Sun, 08 Dec 2002 12:07:12

I built it when GPL first came out.  Of course I needed to upgrade a
long time ago but I'm poor.  I've mangaged to get by all this time,
*BUT* GTR2002 sounds too good to wait any longer.  I plan on getting an
EpoX 8RDA+ mobo and AMP 2100+ cpu.  Right there is more than I can
afford, so can I get by with my existing GF2 32MB video card?  Or would
I be better off with a cheaper cpu/mobo combo and better video card?  Is
the Ti4200 still the best bet for the money?  64 or 128 MB?  What is the
cheapest solution to get good frame rates with high details in GTR2002?
Thanks.

I have an Overclocked 300A at 450 :) It runs as my "server/router/***"
computer. It hasn't been my *** computer for the last 3 years.. hehe

Unless you plan to be able to buy a new vid card soon to go with your
proposed mobo/CPU, you should put together a system with a little more
balance. I'm not sure if you can save enough on your MB/CPU purchase to
swing a Ti4200, but if you can, do it! Otherwise, get a GF3 that you can
overclock. Go for 128MB too, memory rules.

I just replaced my GF2-Ti64MB with a GF4-Ti4200-128MB. YIKES!!! I more
than doubled my 2001SE Benchmark. FYI, I have a 1.3Ghz Athlon T-Bird on
an IWill KK266 mobo with 512MB of PC133 RAM. Nothing is overclocked,
even though my mobo/CPU are very capable.

I haven't run any sims on it yet, as I just got the vid card yesterday.
It made a world of difference for Medal Of Honor, I made SURE to check
THAT out :-) I expect to have no problems running GTR2002 when I finally
get it. (Thanks to a very kind soul in this newsgroup!) I'm stuck with
dial-up service :-((

I still need to get F1-2K2 though, GTR probably won't work with F1-2000.
<hehe>

So that's my opinion...take what you will.

A GF2 won't really cut it for GTR2002 - mainly because of high resolution
textures in the game.  You'd be better off getting a 1700+ and a Ti4200 (128MB)

Yes you are the last person on the face of the earth running an o/c'd
celeron 300 sorry to break it to you :)

Nope, not the last Celeron OC'er.  :)  I haven't been doing many
sims for the past year or so, but my 300A has been cooking away at 450
for over four years now as my prime PC.  It's pretty happy with GPL,
NFS-PU, Rally Trophy, SCGT, Insane, etc.

But now I'm also considering an upgrade.  I'd like to run "modern
sims" like NR2002/2003, F1-2002, GTR2002, LFS, RSC, TIR, etc.  I've
got a Voodoo 5500 AGP card that I'd like to get a little more life out
of (there's always GPL :), so I'm thinking of a similar AMD setup to
what you listed and then upgrading the video card a bit further down
the road.  (I figure the system may not be "balanced" or optimized
with the V5, but it will be a heck of a lot faster than what I've got
now, and will get even better once I upgrade the video -- the shock of
the full upgrade might be too much for me. :)

Opinions from the experts?  (Thanks, guys!)

makes it my "main *** pc" too....

GPL and LFS run fine, GTR2002 doesn't. Maybe some day soon I'll find some
cash and upgrade :0)

I know.  In fact, that's what I did.  I broke down and I bought a bunch of
new parts for a modern system on the credit card.  Well, I *had* to.  How
else could I run GTR2002?

LFS runs fine? I've gotta P3-933MHz 128MB with a GT4-Ti4600-128MB and
LFS slugs at 20 fps.

I know my system is pretty unbalanced. What would you all recommend,
more RAM or more CPU?

The point is LFS is very slow. I don't know what am I doing wrong with
the config. My personal theory is that, being a beta, the game is not
graphic-card optimized and is CPU intensive because of all the
physics. I understand CPU is the bottleneck here because: (a) 3rd
person replays go smoother that actual 1st person playing and (b)
resolution hardly haver an effect in performance.

Am I doing something wrong? What upgrade do you recommend me (RAM or
CPU)?

Osezno

You definitely need more RAM. But make sure that your motherboard
supports the new Tualatin processors, or you won't be able to get much
faster CPU than you already have... you may have to buy a new
motherboard for a new CPU, and the RAM on your current motherboard
probably won't work with the new one...

Your system is far more powerful than mine, but you get lower fps? LFS isn't
superfast on my machine but I can pull 30-35 fps offline which is as much as
I get with F1 2001/2 or something. Sounds like your hardware is ok - what
software are you using? Do you have Office Quickstart and half a dozen other
cpu-cycle-sucking systray apps running?

Cheers

Tony,

quite impressive and rather inexpensive. Unluckily my PC was stolen few weeks
later and I had to begin from scratch. Went with a XP1500+ and a GF2 DDr 64 on a
VIA chipset board those days.
IMO your GF2 (if no MMX) should be good for another run on a Celeron or XP
system. So go for a CPU-upgrade.
