the ff seems to randomly cut out in gpl. does this happen in any other
games? how can I stop it?

It doesnt happen when u use the Serial port instead of USB.
I switched to serial for this reason.
Maybe Guillemot will make a new driver

If it is happening with USB only, check to ensure that your USB is not
sharing an IRQ with another device...and your serial port is likely not, for
example.  If this happened in my machine, I would disable the serial port
and give that IRQ to the USB since the USB port is faster and
smoother.

The wheel doesn't have the problem generally, and your description suggests
99% a USB problem.
