Has anyone seen the Guillemot Ferrari Force Feedback wheel for PCs
(not the N64 or other console versions) in retail stores? if so, how
much?

I haven't seen any in stores around me (Toronto, Canada) yet and I'm
hesitant to get it off their website since that's probably MSRP and
stores may have it for cheaper.

Thanks for any help.

I know you want the Canadian
but the UK prices might help you or someone else
Game and EB have the PC version for 89.99 in their stores

Glad I am not the only one who can't find it anywhere in Toronto.  I am
still looking for THOROUGH reviews of this one and to find out a local
retail price.  It looks like it has a lot of potential, but then so did SOS
'37!!  If it uses the usual 10-cent potentiometers instead of some optical
or other system, it will be a no-go for me.  I simply refuse to fiddle with
and clean pots. any more (on a newly purchased item--I have enough of it
already).

I'm not familiar with the technical aspects of FF wheels but maybe you
could check with the guy at http://www.mgprs2.com/ who did a review of
the Guillemot Ferrari FF wheel about the potentiometers.

Does the Logitech Formula Force wheel use the optical system? I want a
reliable wheel.

BTW, the lowest price I found for the Logitech wheel for Canadians is
$176 from www.canada.buy.com (they offer a $15 coupon for first time
buyers and shipping is $18). So if you add the shipping and exchange
rate to the Guillemot wheel's price from the Guillemot website it
comes out to approx $30 more than the Logitech after taxes and all.

Anyhow, please tell me if you find the Guillemot wheel around Toronto.
Thanks.

Thanks for the info. I did the conversion and the UK price comes out
more than buying it from Guillemot online at $129 USD.

I guess that takes me one step closer to buying it from Guillemot
online.

I read on the Forum on the Guillemot website (North America) that the
Ferrari wheel is not optical...it uses the pots. But then <this is
what I read> pots are supposed to be more accurate and result in a
lower drop in frame rates. Supposedly the Microsoft wheel is the only
one that's optical.

How hard is it to clean the pots?

A lot harder than never having to touch the thing until it is completely
worn out from old age or obsolescence.  The new MS mouse is optical,
too....no more cleaning the *** ball and little wheels.  Same idea,
except that a mouse is 100 times easier to clean than the innards of a force
feedback wheel and pedals.

How much is the Guillemot Ferrari FF wheel in retail store?

I have the Guillemot Ferrari wheel. It just came in Friday. It does use
pots. The one for the steering is quite large compared to others I've seen.
Cleaning  pots is easy and they do offer better resolution than optical. So
the choice is up to the buyer. Do you want better resolution with some
infrequent maintanence, or do you want want sloppier steering with no
maintanence? Here's the picture, actually optical can give better
resolution. But it gets the jitters so bad that you couldn't drive with it.
By the time you calm the jitters so the wheel is drivable, the resolution is
actually less than a potentiometer. I'd say about 128 to 96. Quite a spread.

I promised several people that I'd do a review on here and post it elsewhere
also. I'm hoping to do a 'shoot out' with the Act Labs Force (if they come
through for me). I'll wait a couple more days to see what happens. In the
mean time I'd have to say that the Guillemot is a nice wheel with QC
problems. More later.

Some didn't get a driver disk. Mine was on the top inside the box, like an
afterthought because they are usually packed near the manual. A few guys got
a bad wheel and had to return it. Not good it its mail order. The next one
was good. This is just stuff from the Guillemot site's forum. Someone on
here had one that was erratic in USB and Serial mode. He got another one and
it was fine. Mine pulled to the right in Win Controllers setup and in games.
I thought I might have to send it back, but opted to pull off the cover and
look for a trimmer (small pot). I found it and half a turn later everything
was great. So I guess I'm saying that out of the 8 or so people I know of
that have one, all but 2 had problems. Of  course, there may be hundreds who
got good ones right away. I ordered one on a Friday night off the their web
site. Monday I got an email saying they forgot to charge shipping and
couldn't send it without my credit card info again. A few emails later and
that was straightened out. I got it in 3 days, but it was the wrong wheel.
They sent me their Nintendo shocker wheel. Then they overnighted me the
right wheel and paid for pickup of the wrong one. Though I must say,
Guillemot Customer service was very  pleasant. They're just going through
growning pains. Still, if it was faulty, and I had to pay $20 to ship it
back, I would have been, umm... very upset (heheh).

Funny, I was gonna buy the Intellimouse w/intellieye (the Explorer is
too big for my hand) along with a FF wheel as a Xmas present for
myself. However I think I'll stick with either the Guillemot or
Logitech wheel if going optical means lower frame rates (I only have a
C300A and Banshee card) and less sensitivity. Supposedly you only have
spray the pots with some stuff.

So you're gonna go with the MS wheel?

How much is the Guillemot Ferrari FF wheel in retail store?

by Marc Collin » Tue, 21 Dec 1999 04:00:00

I already have a Saitek R4, which is better than the MS because it uses the
MS guts but also has a real shifter and a better feeling wheel.  I would
consider upgrading to a newer wheel if it had any advantages over my current
set-up (no pots to clean would be my #1 criteria).  The optical steering has
1024 segments in my Saitek.  It is dead solid, requires no calibration and
never needs to be cleaned.  Couldn't ask for a smoother wheel in GPL (even
though it has less gradations than a typical potentiometer).

The pedals use pots, which are a pain in the ass.  They also, especially the
brake, have too few gradations (64 each).  Interesting that the pots are the
problem for sensitivity AND maintenance.  It is a function of the design.
They can make as many or few gradations as they want with either optical or
pots.--depends on how much they want to spend and charge you and whether
they can write competent drivers to go along with it.

Sounds like the Ferrari wheel should be approached with great caution at
this point.

Hopefully someone will give us the details of the guts of the thing.  We
have subjective opinions about the feel--I would like also to hear from
people who are already very familiar with the feel of the MS/Saitek and
Logitech wheels and have them compare it to them.

Marc.
