F1 2001 in XP crashes on startup - still! PLZ HELP

by Luke Phillip » Tue, 09 Apr 2002 00:26:48

If anyone could help with this annoying problem, it would be greatly
appreciated. I got the F1 2001 bug again recently, and re-installed it on my
system. Everything goes fine, select my video card, select the resolution
and color depth, click analize, it does its thing then i click finish...
Boom, straigh back to the desktop. I tried running the game again, but with
the same thing, the F1 2001 "splash screen" pops up for a sec, then it
dissapears and does nothing. Im running a dual boot and are able to get it
to work in 98, but i cant use the internet through there, and would rather
not haveto re-boot the computer just to play one game. Ive tried going from
the latest drivers (28.??) to 23.11's even but still no luck. Ive installed
the development update (i assume this is the patch). The only thing that has
changed from when i used to play the game  is that i've installed another
h/d, but windows has allocated the drive as e: rather than d: but i cant see
that effecting it since its a fresh install. Here are my system specs

Celeron 850
ABit bh-6 mobo
128mb sdram
64mb geforce 2 mx 400
SB 128 soundcard
LWFF
12.1gig h/d (C:)
8gig h/d (D:)
42x CD (E:)

Any help would be much appreciated!

Have you tried all the suggestions in the previous thread, Luke?  I'm wondering too if you don't have a corrupt file.  Try downloading the F1 2001 update patch from here:  http://www.simracingworld.com/html/files/?Cat=54

Still no luck. Whats worse is, i go testing with the standard patched game i
98, drive around, exit to the race info screen, then if i exit from there it
crashes to the desktop. This is real frustrating because i never had these
problems when i had it installed a few months ago! Any ideas?

Luke

You might also check that you have full read/write permission for the
game directory. This is a feature of the NTFS file system used under
NT/XP.
I quote from Anandtech site:

"Your normal software and games could not care less what file system
they are being stored on. As long as it's supported by the operating
system you are using, there will be no problem. With NTFS, however,
permissions can play a factor in whether a game runs correctly or not.
If you don't have access to a particular file that's needed by the
software, it's not going to work. This is different than when a file
is stored on FAT32, and is probably responsible for the mistaken
belief that a game, or other software, must be compatible with NTFS.
This is another good reason to familiarize yourself with the file and
folder permissions in NTFS."

I think rightclick on directory, then Properties will show you
status.
