I -WANT- to like this game so much, because there hasn't been a new rally
game in a while, and the graphics of CMR4 look awesome!! great car models,
intriciate stages.. etc.

BUT, the physics still stink of CMR syndrome.

There was an article I read, about how they aren't going to use the "center
wheel" physics any more in CMR4. Which was a great thing, since it was
pretty obvious that is what they were using..

If you watch a replay of CMR4, you'll know something is funky. I'll try to
explain...

Say you are taking a right hand corner, drifting the car perfectly around
(which is so easy to do). Right before the exit of the corner, for no
reason, your car will quickly accellerate right a few feet and aid in coming
out of the drift. It's really hard to describe, but you'll see it crytal
clear. It's as though there is a programmed aid to try and help you with
sliding around a corner, by helping you get in the drift, helping you in the
drift, and then trying to kick you out of the drift right at the end of the
corner.

The second thing I"ve noticed is at potential jumps. When the car DOES get
airborn, about 50% of the time, the jumps look plain fake. Once the car gets
the crest, it's as though the car is lifted for you and then flopped down a
few meters later. Sometimes there's crests where you would expect to jump,
but the car doesnt' get air at all, and times when you wouldnt' expect your
car to jump, and it will fly vertically and then just flop down. I hope I'm
wrong again, but it's as though some crests are programmed to be jumps.
Either way, the jumping feels fake as hell sometimes, and looks fake as hell
on replays all the time.

Like I said, I want to really like this game.. but watching the replays seem
to defy simple physics. Watching the replays should be half the fun :) But
they are annoying as hell..

Spot on review.
It's got everything right in so many departments except the one's that
really matter in a driving game/sim.....the physics.
Playing the game with a FF wheel and pedals just highlights the problem.
To get an idea of what is missing, do a back to back comparison with Rally
Trophy. RT's physics weren't perfect, but they are light years ahead of CM4.
RT was a joy to play and thoroughly ***ive. CM4 isn't.
Too bad, as CM4 looks like a million bucks. The rain effects on the
windscreen are gobsmackingly good.

Thats what I heard also. But I tried the demo and am very dissapointed.
I know I can't expect GPL standard, but this is real bad.

I had more fun with Colin McRea 1. And yes Rally trophy is way better then
this.

The demo was discussed when it was released. The view of the game will
be the same I would imagine.

CM4.

I totally forgot to mention the fact that the FF doesn't seem to also be
linked directly to reality. It's like everything goes through some sort of
"filter" before it goes to the user.. It's just a fancy rumble with
centering..  Which is really bad, considering FF in Rally Trophy was a great
asset to driving, and the illusion of reality.

Good to look at but it pretty much stinks to play due to
handling/physics being so poor.

Here's hoping Xpand Rally, Rallisport Challenge 2, or Burns Rally can
get it right for once.

If it had more realistic physics it might be fun. I have the game and it's
nearly impossible to control the cars with my Momo. Either these game
designers don't understand car physics or they're too lazy or cheap to
implement it in their games; not sure which. I used to think Porsche
Unleashed had good physics until I played LFS.

Live for Speed has great physics but there aren't enough rally tracks; only
three + reversed. I enjoy the RB4 car on Blackwood Rallycross the most. I've
played LFS more than any game I've owned. I'd go with it if you haven't
already. Online demo is free and full game is 12 pounds; approx $22 US.

Have you tried TRally?  Without doubt the best rally sim,  physics wise that
is.

I tried the demo... my TSW didn't work at all with it. Not too bad,
because I was able to drive it with the keyboard with some success. I
don't remember a lot of SIMS being that way ;) It seems to be a direct
port from the console where the input is mostly digital/ on-off...
Probably more enjoyable on an X-Box...
