I'm trying to figure out how to get my hands on the ICR Conversion
tracks..specifically Mid Ohio.  I've found Dave Noonan's page, and sent an
email to the link, but cannot locate either the base ICR tracks, nor the
converter.

Does anyone know where I might be able to get the bits?  Yes, I'm running
broadband for a direct send of email/ file transfer.

Thanks

YOu need to buy a copy of the converter form Dave Noonan's page, and you need to find a copy of
ICR/ICR2 for the tracks.  Nooone can legally post or give away either items.  ICR/ICR2 often comes
up available on eBay for very cheap.  here's the link to order the converter

Marc,
I think you're "supposed to" have the original tracks from the CD. It's
probably still available on eBay.  Dave Noonan had to be very careful not to
step on anyone's copyright toes. There's a demo converter that only works with
a couple tracks, but I have neither the demo nor the full. Someone else know
where they are?

The ICR2 version of mid Ohio is not the most accurate....in fact it barely
qualifies as a reasonable facimile.  There is a conversion of the CPR
version for SCGT, that supposedly was also gonna be updated for the F1 2k+
series.  However, I haven't seen it there or in the Heat mods.    If you
wish to 'learn' Mid Ohio then your best bet would be to find the budget
title AMA SUperbike.  Lousy game but great track representations.
"IF" the Cart World Series 2002 title is still on track, then that
program 'should' have the newest version of Mid Ohio.  But the soonest we
will see that is late this year or early next.

I can see how GPL causes the expectation that everything is available
downloadable for free... :-)

As you'll have to acquire a copy of ICR2, I suggest you read the notes on
Alison's page here
http://eaglewoman.simracing.dk/gpl/
under CONTENTS - ADD-ONS -  TRACKS - ENHANCED CART TRACKS FOR GPL
to get the best version possible (Rendition).
(I was disappointed by the graphics of Laguna Seca from my version, but it
didn't matter as so many happy memories of driving the corkscrew in ICR2.
Dave's converter very well worth it for that).

I'm not trolling here,  I have a real question.  Why is it illegal to give
someone the tracks from ICR2 if it is not available from the manufacturer
anymore?

I understand copyright infringements and the author has to make his money, but
buying on ebay does not pay the freight for the original maker of the software.
It just puts money in the pocket of the person who owns the software.

Again, not trolling, just looking for a logical answer.

Michael,
Your first mistake is assuming it's logical. ;-)
I think it's the way copyright laws were written for pre-computer media. The idea
is to protect the author (or publisher) for a "reasonable" (?) length of time. If a
title (usually book or song) builds popularity slowly, the author will still profit
years later. So why don't software publishers/authors release the rights to older
titles to the public domain or sell them? Probably not worth it.
Any one know more?

Whoops....you don't own the software, you just own the cd or floppies
that the program was transferred to....!!!

Remember, the convertors and such were new ground back in the glory
days of ICR2 and N2.  To get permission to tweek the sims for the Pits
Touring car league, they had to agree NOT to make the tracks freely
available.  Remember Sega had the rights to Daytona and Papyrus was placed
in the position of tracking down Daytona clones and making sure they never
saw the light of day.(if you want to someday enter into a legal agreement
with Nascar, you don't provide a means to gut one of Nascar's exclusive
licenses.)
So the Pits guys played by the rules and made their convertors only work
if you actually had a cd with the tracks.
Now these days....if your are diligent about searching the web, you can
probably find just about any old track already converted and available for
downloading.  Even some that have been fixed so they work in a D3D
enviroment.(you wouldn't beleive how many times we heard of a former 3dfx
user buying a tnt cuz it went 5 frames faster and suddenly found he couldn't
drive any of the old ICR2 tracks that had been converted for use with the
TPTCC leagues.  )<whoo boy>

IMO, it was and is, a matter of a few self-appointed 'net cops'. Went
through the same thing in the early 90's with midis. Some dork claimed
he represented Michael Jackson and the music industry. Tried to
intimidate us by sending emails. Any cease and desist order must be hand
delivered paper documents. Turned out the dork lived in Florida and had
a 'home based business' of leaching midis from the net and selling them
on diskettes.
