Force feedback or not?

by Troy Master » Thu, 22 Mar 2001 23:48:04

Gentlemen,

I've been using my Thrustmaster Digital Pro 2 with N4, and think it's a good
wheel. But I've recently gotten the urge to try a force feedback wheel (I've
never tried one on any game) and wondered if most people here think it's
worth it.

Thanks for your opinions.

Here is the best editorial I read on the subject:

I hope it helps. Also, if ou are running N4, FF will finally enable you
to see what the caster angle is all about ;).

If you play sims like GPL and N4, it's a must-have, since the ff gives
you extra feedback of the behaviour of the car.
In arcade games like NFS:Porsche 2000 and Colin McRae II it's just
there for the fun factor.
All in all I couldn't live without ff.

Ok, I could, but simracing wouldn't be as much fun then.

Force feedback or not?

I was using a Thrustmaster GP1, then I got a set of pedals from my
brother-in-law (he makes them), then I moved to an Act Labs Force RS,
with the old pedals rewired to work with the new wheel. The first
night I used it, it almost flew! I mean I almost through it out the
window! It took me a week of messing with setting and just driving it,
to get to any comfort level. I can now race either with it or without
it. I really have no preference either way. I use it in GPL, to give
me a little bit more information. I do not use it in NFS5 as it sucks
too much CPU at certain times. Right now these are the only two sims I
am driving. Then again the Sim Chassis Racing Pod really helps, it
puts my body in a racing postion and sets my mind to think about
racing. Too bad with all this hardware I still suck!

It's hard to give a real answer to that.
If you can afford one then I say go for it, get a Force feedback wheel.

However, if your scrimping and scraping to accord one your old non-FF wheel
is fine.

Get one if you can afford it but its not worth breaking the bank for.

2 Thumbs and 2 Big Toes up for FF.. As Ashley says once you get use to
it you will never go back to a Non-FF wheel. Btw: FF-joysticks are great
for bike racing too.. <g> Cheers Thom_j.

I have a LWFF, and I love it! The FF in both GPL and N4 adds so much to
the experience, so much so that I just couldn't be without FF now.

It's a shame that Logitech no longer make the WFF, it's a design classic
in my opinion. Not sure which other wheels use the i-force cable FF
technology...anyone? But I found it MUCH better than the MS gearing
system.

You never know you might be able to get a LWFF second hand, unless I get
to it first ;). BTW, if anyone has one for sale in the UK, I'll pay top
money for it!

I've just done a ball bearing conversion to mine,
http://members.nbci.com/JensSchu/LogiCorner.htm and now it's even
better!!! A real precision instrument in my opinion.

Cheers

Well, based on feedback from here and other fora, I decided to order an
Act-labs RS Wheel and shifter. I'll be back with a full report when I get it
running....

If you turn off the texture forces, the effects forces are pretty good.
It sure helps in the snow rally :)

Jason.

Don't be disappointed if you're not immediately impressed.
It will probably take you a little while to get the settings
just the way you like it.

Good luck.
Cheers.
