Voodoo5 XP Driver Problems

by The Black Cat =^..^ » Sun, 11 Nov 2001 17:04:34

I've tried the stuff that comes with Windows, including the latest
update, but still can't get better than about 30fps, and usually a
good deal less, in N4 compared to about 45-60 that I got in ME with
proper drivers.

So I went to Voodoo Files, downloaded the driver set entitled "WorLord
V5500 XP AGR Drivers," ( http://www.racesimcentral.net/) installed
the drivers *only* and when I rebooted, I could only get 800x600
16-colour mode. So I rolled back to the Windows drivers again.

My questions are these:

First and foremost, any idea what I did wrong (if anything) to cause
the display to only have 16-colour mode?

Are there specific files I could install which will only affect games
whilst leaving the regular stuff alone? IOW, did I install some
drivers that did more harm than good?

What does he mean by "The install/reboot/repair cycle may be necessary
for the 3dfx tools to work..."?  I'd like to have 3dfx Tools, but if
it's going to be endless hassles, I can live without them.

Finally, if anyone has had noteworthy success with a particular set of
drivers, please share your experiences as I'd really like to upgrade
but so far have had little luck finding one that will actually work.

System info: XP, P3/800, 512 megs,

Thanks in advance.

With XP you are getting 'homemade' drivers since Nividia has NOT seen fit
to continue support of the 3dfx line.  So any drivers  for XP you dload will
be suspect at best.  I would suggest check out the forums at the web sites
that offer these files and see if they have a set that work with XP.  Good
luck.(I suspect you'll be an Nvidiot soon)

Thanks Dave.  I just got the V5 as an interim measure when the
GeForce2 I got simply refused to work on my system.  I knew that it
wouldn't be supported but thought I'd take the chance anyway.

Shamn on them, remember most of the GPL mods are homemade too!

Like the ones at http://www.falconfly.de/3dfx.htm

There are other, excellent alternatives to nVidia.  So you don't neccesarily
have to become an "Nvidiot".  :-)

www.ati.com for example.

I'm using a V3 with XP on my second machine, using drivers from
http://www.falconfly.de/3dfx.htm titled "Hoe" or something similar. They
work fine for D3D (including GPL with the D3D patch) and the 3DFX tools
work. Can't get GPL to run in Glide though. Maybe you could give these a
try.
