Does N4 run faster with DX8 than it does with DX7?

I have a P-III-600/100 with a Geforce 2 MX 32mb AGP card.  I have V-synch
turned off and don't run AA.  I'm currently using DX7a and get anywhere
between 30 fps and 45 fps, depending on traffic.

It's very unlikely to be faster with DX8 since it's a DX7 game.
Essentially, running a DX7 game under DX8 still uses the old DX7 code.
Unless the developers update their code to DX8 they can't take advantage of
new features.  Anyway, DX8 isn't noticeably faster than DX7.  GF2 users have
been reporting faster frame rates with OpenGL so give that a try :)

Or not.  I find I get a *much* prettier picture (color saturation, etc.)
with OpenGL and a *much* faster frame rate w. D3D (on a Voodoo 5500).  OTOH,
after I tweaked the Glide settings for GPL, I ignored the other params, so
I'm probably not optimized.  I'm sure you've read here that you don't *have*
to run DX8/8a, despite what the N4 docu says...and after considering the
litany of problems with 8 (not so much 8a), I've decided to stick w. 7a for
the nonce.

I'm using DX8 and a V3000 with the 1.07 drivers and all is good.  As good as
it can be with this card I suppose?

Why does it say it wants DX-8 when installed?

Well, I haven't got N4 since it's not released in the UK, so I can't check
myself to be sure, but if people are finding that it runs with DX7 (see
Stevens post) then it's a DX7 game.

Yep, that's cause you've got a V5.  It's the other way round on a GF2
(better looking in d3d, faster in opengl), and the original poster said he
had a GF2 MX :)   It's all down to the vid card drivers.

I picked up maybe 2 fps in d3d, open GL seems the same.
I have only had DX8a for about a week now, and so far seems pretty stable -
no freezes or ctd's in N4 yet.

Yeah, if I recall correctly, it says DirectX 8 "must" be installed in the
dialogue box during installation.  For whatever reason, I couldn't get the
game to run until I did install DirectX 8.

N4 and DX7a vs. DX8a

Maybe it is a DX8 game then.  The only reason I thought it was DX7 is that
i've read about ten posts here from people here who say they are running it
with DX7.  It's possible they've actual got DX8 on, since if you try to
install DX7 once DX8 is on, it doesn't overwrite anything, and you end up
still with DX8.  Maybe there's a few people who don't realize that.

If they really *do* have DX7 on, and N4 works, then it's DX7 code.  Plus the
demo was DX7.

I still have DX7a on my machine.  Thinking about upgrading to DX8a, but why
if it is working fine the way it is.

I do, in fact, have DX7a on my computer.  N4 runs just fine.  I suppose
there's an outside chance that F1-2000 CE installed DX8 without my knowing
it, but I doubt it.  I'll check when I get home tonight.

BTW, the N4 install message does NOT say that you "Must" install DX8.  I
read it thoroughly to make sure I wasn't going to crash N4 by skipping the
DX8 installation.

This bit above was just a vague theory, didn't mean to offend anyone.

So it is DX7.  Actually a few people have posted better fps with DX8 on
GF2's, so it could be worth trying.  Whether it *should* be faster or not
doesn't really matter if it *is* faster.  So much for my theory...<VBG>
