Help with GP2 hardware please

I have been using GP2 on a 166/200 based system for a couple of years,
however since upgrading to an AMD K6-2/450 with a S3 8MB Savage video
card I am getting big problems.

Although GP2 is now smooth as ever, it occaisionally blows up.  I just
return to Win98.  It seems to be reproducible if I brake hard and press
pause, then take pause off.

Anyone got any clues what could be causing my problem.  It may be
impressive at this speed but it is no fun if I can't even complete a
quickrace!
