Best hardware for GP2?

by Claude Trembla » Wed, 24 Jul 1996 04:00:00

I have a P90 with 16M & (ATI "Mach64" 2M card), and I'm interested to
upgrade my system at a reasonnable cost for good playability in GP2.

- Should I replace my "P90" chip with a "P166" ?

- Or I want to replace my motherboard and upgrade to a"Cyrix686 p166+"
which is cheaper and probably faster?

(With most detail on, would I get a maximum frame rate with any of these
system ??? )

Thank you in advance.

Chris

Don't forget the added expense of all new SIMM's if you upgrade
your motherboard. Another solution is to try what I did. I had (have?) a
P90 with 24mb RAM and a Diamond Stealth64 PCI w/ 2mb VRAM.
I haven't upgraded the memory yet, but I plan on eventually
upgrading to probably 48mb of RAM. What I did do was fairly easy and
relatively inexpensive. I purchased the PCI daughtercard for the
Stealth64 adding an additional 2mb VRAM and bought the Intel Pentium
Overdrive processor for the P90 which increases the speed to 150mhz. I
was able to do both for $180 with a friend who could get the stuff for
his wholesale price, but it is still a solution and relatively
inexpensive.

Hi Chris,

I'm running the game on a dx4-100, 8 megs of ram, 1 meg VRAM on VGA mode
- and it works fine, bar the replays, which slow down if there are a lot
of cars involved.  The thing is, more is better - but with 2 megs of VRAM
you should easily get most of the detail on SVGA mode.  I'd buy the game
and see if you need to upgrade to 166 mhz - my gut feel is you won't need
to...

Cheers

Why would you have to change all your SIMMS? last time I checked you
could just take your old SIMMS out of your old Mboard and put them
in your new one.  And since you can buy 16Megs of EDO for ~$110 now,
even if you did have to buy all new ram, it is not that expensive.
in fact, that is what I would upgrade before I did anything with
the processor, because it is so cheap now.

On a P6/200 with all the graphic detials on I get a recommend frame of
18. With the sky turned off it jumps to 24.
At Monaco, last in the field at the start grid, with all on, except
the sky, the processor is at 160%. As the cars start into the first
turn, it jumps to 190-200. After the first turn it settles down to
130-150, along the tunnel it drops to below 100, then into the turns
after the tunnel it jumps back to 120-130 range.
I found that if I try that trick where you lower the dialed in
frame rate to 2 frames below the "recommend" that the performance
goes UP, with same level of detail.
The other tracks are not a real problem for the P6/200, again with
all detail on, except the sky.
The sky seems to be the biggest frame rate hog, and offers the least
real enhancement to the sim. I don't look at the sky when racing and
therefore turn it off as it is not needed.

Keep in mind that at 18 frames, at Monaco, with the sky on, it is
gorgeous beyond belief.

PS My log report is 379 processor, 606 video on the P6.

Don't bother with more memory on the video card - it will only help in
Windows. As for the processor - I play on a P133 and while it is
perfectly playable with most textures on, I'd still kill to play it on a
P200!
