ACM Game Card Installation Hassle

by m » Sat, 12 Oct 1996 04:00:00

I'm *attempting* to have an ACM game card installed on a new
P5 system running Win95. It will primarily be used for GP2 with
a T2. The people building the system are good at networks but
rather clueless when it comes to sims & controllers ( like me ).

The system has the Sound Blaster 32AWE PnP which I understand
is the root of the problem. I have been unable to contact the
Thrustmaster website for over a week as I believe it is being
re-built.

So the questions are:

1. Is it possible to get the ACM up & running with the Sound
   Blaster PnP?

2. I have an old Sound Blaster 16. Can this puppy live happily
   with the ACM?

3. If the ACM won't work with the Sound Blaster PnP, what are
my alternatives? Use the old 16 bit SB? or use the game
port on the PnP?  Are there other game cards that work
   with the Pnp?

4. Is the Thrustmaster site *ever* going to be reachable?

I realize this is an old topic around here but I've looked
thru all the articles still at netcom and cannot locate any
*solid* info. And, considering the huge number of links to
GP2 on the web, using my old 486, by the time I locate the
pertinent info, Grand Prix 3 will be coming out and a new set
of problems will be the topic for discussion...:-)

TIA

I had the same problem. AWE32 PnP's game port refused to disable. I
called TM and they gave me the following procedure:
1) Uninstall your  AWE32 in 95.
2) Shut down the computer
3) Remove the AWE32, put the ACM in.
4) Reboot, install the ACM in 95.
5) Shut down
6) Put your AWE back in.
7) Reboot
8) Configure the ACM in 95. (95 got the wrong i/o address on mine)
9) Play

Yes, but the exact procedure varies with each machine... on some the
Awe32PnP disables eradily, just like you'd think it should. On others,
you can rip your hair out for weeks before you get it working.

Yes, absolutely, if it has the jumper on the board marked JYEN, just
pull that jumper and you're there... better yet, don't use that card,
sell it to me. Name your price.

Seriously, you should be able to get the Awe32 PnP gameport disabled
eventually, but it might take some fancy maneuvering. If you lose
patience, your old SB 16 will do quite nicely.

It's reachable right now, I've been hitting it almost every day and it
hasn't failed on me yet... Just in case, check the URL you're hitting...
the correct URL for Thurstmaster is: <http://www.thrustmaster.com>

Good luck, and if you do get the AWE 32 PnP working happily with the ACM
card, I'm not kidding about wanting to buy your old SB 16, if it has
jumpers... name your price.

First thing you must do is check to see if your gameport on the sound
blaster awe 32 is disabled. If it isn't check your manual on how to
disable it. You should only have to remove one jumper. Then all you have
to do is put in the acm card. Install the software that came withit. Run
it to cailbrate then your all set.

He's asking about a PnP Awe32... it doesn't have jumpers.

You are not wrong. It is a TOTAL PAIN IN THE ***this problem.

SB16PNP is just as bad.

I spent weeks trying to get it working and gave up. All the installing,
uninstalling, etc did not work.

Whoever caused this problem at Microsoft or Creative should be
apologising to all us fustrated gamers for the hours we have wasted!!!!

"Plug and Pray" is an apt desciption

Hey...I'll  outbid you for it!

Search your drive for CTPNP.CFG. In that file, use a text editor to
change disable=0 to disable=1. Thats all it takes.

I'm about to install the Awe32, hopefully today. I heard that the way
to go is to install the game card without the sound card. Get it up
and running in Win95 so it reserves the port. Then install the AWE32.

Also, for more info you can try dejanews and search for joystick or
AWE32 to get old articles on this subject.

I thought this just HAD to be a troll... but sure enuff, CTPNP.CFG was
there... I did change the DISABLE=0 to DISABLE=1 in the Gameport section
of the file, but I haven't rebooted yet to see if that does the job.

Chuck, if it does, you're God.

I just installed an AWE32, an adaptec 2920, and a HP4000s and I also
have the ACM card for my joystick.

I didn't even think there was a cfg file but I heard you could disable
a device by going into the system manager and removing the check from
the box in the device's properties labeled 'original configuration'. I
had to do this both for the joystick port and the ide controller on
the soundcard. The controller was interfering with the SCSI card at
int 10.

Anyway it's working now but it took a long time.

On some systems, that's all you need to do.. I'm lucky, I have one of
those systems. BUT, when I upgraded my BIOS, that method no longer
worked... no matter what I did, every time I rebooted, the soundcard's
gameport was back, and that "original configuration (Current)" checkbox
was checked again...

Nothing would get rid of it until I went back to the original BIOS...
but I'm going to give this method a shot and see what happens... The
upgrade BIOS has some features that I'm dying to get at...
