I have an old AWE32 that I may want to sell.  I'll start the bidding at
$200.

I don't know. But I would suggest disabling plug&play in general.
This is including your BIOS. Then see if the SB can have it's PnP
disabled too. THe manual setup should be the best.

I should think so.

Isn't there a way to disable the GAMEPORT on your PnP card? If not PnP
would be rather useless.

Hi Chuck,

Is your motherboard BIOS PnP?

When you edit your .CFG file, in your experience, does WIN95 release the
resources (adresses) previously allocated to the SB gameport?

I've found that when trying to change status in the Win95 interface, the
card can actually be disabled, which I guess means it's writing to the
CFG file, but the secondary problem is that won't release the address
range it's previously used, which means 201 is not available for the
ACM. This is useless if intending to use a TM T2 or combo FLCS/TQS/RCS
in most games.

I've also found that as long as the resources used by the SB are not
re-occupied by another device, it will re-install intself upon
subsequent re-boot automatically unfortunately, a process over which the
user has no control to my knowledge. I suspect a PnP system BIOS may
play a part in this fiasco.

Does editing your .CFG file circumvent all these problems?

I am running Windows NT 3.51. My AWE32 did not use PnP when I received
the computer. I downloaded and installed CTCM.EXE which causes PnP to
read the cfg file and disable the AWE32 game port. I only checked to
confirm the port was disabled. I have not yet tried to install the ACM
game port.

IF you're lucky. Otherwise at the next bootup Win 95 will redetect the
Soundblaster gameport, install the drivers for it and remove the ACM
card. All with no action on your part. Over and over.

If it were that simple, it wouldn't be a problem. That's the way it's
supposed to work, and in many cases it does just that. It's the other
times that you can tear your hair out and get nowhere. Believe me, That
procedure is the very first thing I try. When it works, it's a relief...
when it doesn't, get ready for some serious thrashing.
