Do I need Thrustmaster's ACM game card to use the T2, or will it
work with a regular joystick port?

I use the Port on my SB32 PnP and it works fine.  They say you are
supposed to use a special one, but I have not seen any need.

As long as the port will recognize 2 joysticks.  Almost all do, however
some older/cheaper ones do not.  Most of the ports on soundcards accept
to joystick inputs for the one port.

You should have a gamecard with adjustable speed controls, but it does not
have to be a Thrustmaster... I used one I got from my local computer dealer
for $11.99 (CAN). As long as it has that little pot on the back so you can
adjust the calibration of the Thrustmaster, it should work great!

Now, I've heard that some machines have problems with a soundcard port.
Something about a speed difference issue.  Could anyone enlighten me, please?
I've tried to run ICR2 on a P90 with a T1, and some of the tracks are just
plain undriveable.  Would a different game card even HELP?  Better display
card?  Faster machine?  You get the idea...

I just bought a Thrustmaster T2 the day before last and it works right out of
a regular joystick port.

That's interesting.  I have a T2 which works just fine through my SB16 game port
on my P133.  However, when I first started racing the original ICR, I had a
486-33, and I couldn't keep the damn car off the walls...my joystick (a CH
Flightstick at the time) wouldn't align properly.  I simply couldn't play the
game, and pulled it off my hard drive (and back to World Circuit).  When I
upgraded my machine to a DX2-66, I loaded ICR up again and everything worked
great..same joystick, same soundcard!  Maybe this is the same sort of thing?

Great, so NOW I have to spend a few hundred MORE bucks to run a 45 dollar
GAME?!? :(

The only graphics I run are skids/paint on, smoke/dirt on, track objects
on(hey, I need my brake markers!) , everything else OFF.  5 drawn ahead, 1
behind, 1 heard, VGA (not SVGA). Now, seeing as I've disabled about 85% of the
fancy graphics, shouldn't I get reasonable playability on a P90 with 16MB?!?
Never mind that I'm only running with 15 opponents...

WOW! I don't undestand this at all. I run ICR2 on a P5-90 as well. I have 32
meg (the only difference in ICR2 this yielded over 16meg was length of
replay). I have a Diamond Stealth 64 2meg-Dram video card. I run the sim in
SVGA with a full field ahead (max opponents). I have it set for 3 or 4 heard.
I have road and grass texture turned off, object texture and possibly horizon
set to auto (I don't remember seeing the horizon blink on/off so I may not
have this set to auto). With the sim set like this I get a great frame rate.
I wonder what the difference is?

The best thing to use is a game card wih a speed adjustment.. some of the
newer systems (i.e. Pentiums) poll the game port too often and make your
joystick (t1 or T2) calibration waaaay of the scale. The solution is a
speed-compensating game port that you can adjust the high and low ranges of
your T1/T2. I found the easiest way to do it was in the Joystick calibration
routine... simply adjust the game card, check the range of the calibration.
you want to avoid getting ridiculously high numbers. Then if it comes up too
high, clear the calibration and adjust the game card speed compensation and do
it again.

It takes a few tries usually but you only ever have to do it once.

Just remember to recalibrate your joystick/T1/T2/Pedals in ALL of the games
you play to make sure they are running on the compensated readings.

And like I said before, the card that I bought works great and cost me a whole
$12.99 Canadian dollars. You don't need to spend the 20-30-40 or whatever
Gravis or Thrustmaster wants you to pay for their version.. just go to your
local computer dealer and get whatever they carry but remember it MUST have
that little adjustment knob on the back to be a speed-compensating game card!

As a human I am quite offended by being refered to as mundane. As one

dignity, not deprivation. At least we can be pure and watch the glory
of a sunrise while you must hide in the shadows to avoid the light. I
have a feeling that being immortal isn't all its cracked up to be,

remorse for drianing the life out of us. Do you kill us when there is
nothing left to take, do you leave us to die in the dark alley to die
alone?) die while you are forced to live on. Living in your secret
societies below lost to not only God but to yourself. I can't see
anything romantic or pridefull in that way of life.

Long thread without an answer.  Simple question.  Will a separate speed
variable game card improve frame rate over the Soundblaster joystick port
on a P120, given the same graphics?

No... a variable speed game card will NOT improve your frame rate.

It will ONLY improve the calibration of certain types of controls such as a
T1/T2 on a fast computer.

Tried it.  NO improved frame rate at all!!!  However it does
calibrate to a lower level allowing sharper turning.
