NASCAR sim from Papyrus.

Hi,
I was just at the SCES and Papyrus had on a NASCAR sim using the same
engine as ICR.  It looked pretty good sounded pretty good for a game still
in development.  I didn't get the feeling of speed like I did with ICR though.
Maybe that will change when the actual game comes out.

I also saw the beta version of Papyrus' NASCAR at SCES sim and I was impressed.
I talked with one of the (race suited) reps from the company and he said that the ICR
software engine was _not_ used since the dynamics of NASCAR are very different from
that of Indy. I tried the beta out there and it sure seemed different - as the
previous poster said, the speed (specifically the acceleration) seems very
'sluggish' - it really gives you a feeling of driving a much bigger and less
manuverable car than the Indy (speaking from someone who has never driven much
more than my VW!). The rep also mentioned that they (the programmers) were spending
a great deal of time simulating car damage of different types - so it will be
possible to continue racing with a damaged car...

I'm looking forward to it (of course)!

[Description of NASCAR sim driving feel deleted]

I wonder if the Papyrus' NASCAR graphic engine is going to include
the car somersaults ala before the safety flaps on the cars' roofs
were installed?  Now that would be utterly spectacular; imagine the
in-car camera view!  ("Whoa, I'm gettin' kinda queasy...!")

So am I.  There's only so much "Bill Elliot's NASCAR" that one can
take...!

I highly doubt they are going to program that into the sim,
having avoided all of that in ICR. It would take a much more
complex dynamic model of the cars, and the ICR engine already
has a hard time to run in real-time on a fast PC. It will
take another hardware evolution before you'll see the ICR
graphics and dynamics AND 3-dimensional accidents. So far
debris doesn't even exist, and AI cars go thru walls and each
other without any impacts. I doubt they'll be able to add all
this to the NASCAR sim and still have it run on anything less
than a Pentium 90...

some stuff...

Anyhow, I just want to say that I hope the game has good damage
controls. In ICR, you can bump the other cars, but not very hard. Which
is realistic. In NASCAR though, you should be able to put the car into
the wall (Gently) and still keep running with damage turned on.

I love ICR. Just want to say that. I was playing Phoenix with
damage turned on. Has ANYBODY ever won a race on a short oval at greater
than 25% with damage turned on and at least 20 other cars? It's HARD. I
keep getting behind people and going "wait....wait for it....ok.......DAMN!"

        Blown tire...
