ask him where he gets these things anymore). I don't know how final
this version was, all I got was "I just got it". Here's what I found,
in no particular order. Ready? Keep in mind I only played it for about
20 minutes, which was all I could stomach. I barely fiddled with the
championship mode, but it seemed cool that you could test drive the car
before joining a team. I didn't play with the car settings, either.
No mouse support in menus, kb only. To go to a previous menu, you have
to scroll down and select "back", hitting esc doesn't always work.
Controller setup screen: 3 sensitivity sliders to adjust - X axis, Y
axis, and Deadzone. That's it. Of course the windows joystick was set
to 2 axis 4 button (TM GP1 wheel). You can reconfigure the buttons,
however. If I remember correctly, each axis can be configured
separately as well, but since the GP1 doesn't have split axis I
couldn't try that out.
Let's drive! I only chose "Arcade" mode (there is no 'Quick Race'
selection). I didn't see any options for car physics. To confirm
previous threads, no, there is no***pit view. I couldn't find the
bumper view, since I don't know the keys.
Driving the car was a chore. Auto-reverse meant that hitting the brakes
would make the car go backwards after it stopped (didn't see an option
to turn it off, and I did have it on manual transmission). Now I get up
to speed, turn the wheel slightly and WOAH the car instantly veers off
to one side. It seems like the steering is just on/off, with nothing in
between. I barely moved the wheel 10 degrees to one side and it just
locks the wheels in that direction, even after messing with the
sliders. Not just that, but when the throttle is jammed, it seems like
the car has 4 wheel steering and the whole car just snakes sideways.
Not in a wheelspin way, but the rear end actually steers(remember this
is viewed from the outside, so I'm not imagining things).
All 4 tires seem to 'float' over the surface, just like NFS, they don't
interact with the ground at all.
Need to reconfigure the controller while racing? Forget it. Press Esc,
quit the race, then highlight 'Back' a few times just to get to the
controller setup.
I didn't race with any AI, but after *trying* to drive this thing by
myself, why would I even bother.
Oh yeah, when you quit out of the race, we get the awesome drive-by
camera that NASCAR Revolution was so proud of! At least you can press
ESC and skip it in this game.
Anyways, that's all I could stand at the time. MAYBE I'll give it
another go later. Infogrames decided to slap the TestDrive name onto
this for the US, and it's a name it deserves.
