ATI Radeon8500 and N4/GPL

I got my new 8500 today and have been playing with my new
toy. I replaced a 3dfx V5500 with the ATI card so that is my
only comparison.

N4
3dfx V5500 1600x1200 no FSAA ~40 FPS
ATI 8500    1600x1200 2xFSAA ~65FPS

GPL
3dfx V5500 1600x1200 no FSAA ~30
ATI 8500    1600x1200 2xFSAA 36FPS solid

My impressions of the ATI card are very good so far. The one big
thing that amazed me is the picture quality and color depth seem
well....... just better and even the desktop image in 2D seems crisper.
My brother has a GF3 card and definitely gets higher frame rates but
I have a feeling that new driver releases are really going to improve
this card.

I'm pretty happy thus far.

I'm in the same boat as you and may be getting an 8500 to replace my V5 but
I have one question for you.  I heard that the 8500's FSAA was not working
yet in the release drivers but  you are showing figures with FSAA enabled.
Can you elaborate?

Thanks.

Yep you're right,  Disabling FSAA made no difference in FPS. I wonder
if I didn't notice because the card does error diffusion dithering. I think
that would soften line jaggies as well. At 1600x1200 I guess AA doesn't
do all that much good. I'll see when they release drivers that support it
correctly I guess.
I guess purchasing a 8500 right now is taking a leap of
faith that ATI will come through on driver support  :)

-Dave B

Actually AA is working in some games, eg f1 2001.. If you select
smoothvision x4 in f1 2001, it looks just awesome, but framerate is bad(I am
running XP tho, so that could be half my problem).

I've red in some posts that 4x fsaa only works up to 800x600, and x2 works
at 1024x768, but anything above that and it's disabled...Driver issue I
guess..

I've got a GF3, KyroII and Now the 8500 OEM, and the GF3 seems alot faster
in racing sims, but I think it is a driver issue as well... IMHO the 8500
runs fantastic, just not as fast as the GF3..

Interesting. What kind of system do you have ? Framerate benchmarks
doesn't say much without processor speed. But right now I think a

that replacing my V5 :)

I would agree with Olav that you would get a bigger performance kick
out of a new CPU. I run a 1.4 AMD Tbird with 512Meg PC150 ram.

Interesting, I'm also looking to replace my "aging" V5 card with
something a bit faster, and since I have a personal beef with nVIDIA
:-), I'm looking at the Radeon 8500
