N4 & ATI Is this my problem?

I thought my problem was the "copy protection" everyone was complaining
about....now I don't think so.

It would hang up at the main menu and either totally lock up the system or kick
the game completely off.

Finally tried the Direct 3d for dedicated servers setting.....managed to get in
far enough to set up and calibrate my wheel and even select some graphics
options.  Still cannot actually drive.  There was NO PICTURE in server mode but
I could hear that I was driving and ramming things in the pits. Went back to
"configure 3D Graphics" and re-set it for normal Direct 3D.  Now I can get as
far as loading a track but still get kicked out when attempting to actually
drive.

Here's my system:

PIII 600 on a SOYO  6BA+ main board
192 MB PC100 RAM
Win 98
ATI All in Wonder Pro AGP x2 w/8 MB SGRAM (possible problem??)
Creative Labs 48x CDROM (Loaded game from this one)
Creative Labs 4224 CDRW

Anyone got any ideas on how to get this thing to drive....????

Thanks

Doug B.

Your video card is almost certainly the problem - are you running the latest
drivers available for the card?  Are you running D3D or OpenGL - if the
latter, be aware that ATI is notorious for flakey drivers, particularly
their OpenGL drivers.

You might want to look at a GeForce2 MX for a good inexpensive upgrade that
would greatly improve N4 performance, even if you get the ATI working.

I think that it's defenitly the ATI card.  I've been trying to run N4 on an AT
Rage Fury Maxx 64 meg card.  I keep getting the complete lock of my system,
while trying to run in D3D.  When I switch over to OpenGL the game doesnt lock,
but it runs slower, and look real bad.  I get no locks what so ever when
running D3D on my Voodoo 2 12 meg, but obviously it runs like a dog.

Thanks ATI!!!!!!

I'm kind of hooked with the All-in-wonder PRO due to the built in tv
tuner...the driver I'm running is a special purpose driver ATI came up with to
solve problems they had which kept N3 from running in hardware acceleration
mode.  Tried setting it for OpenGL but that locked things up even configuring
it.  I would settle for the equivilant of "software mode" like I had to use for
so long in N3 at least till I can come up with a better
solution.....unfortunately this doesn't seem to be an option with N4.

Suppose I could pop for the RAEDON All in wonder but I'm not sure about
investing that kind of money back into an ATI product.

Still open to suggestions on what to do.

Thanks

I've considered the same thing.  I read somplace that a RAEDON will only cost
about $160, if you send your old card to ATI, and get some sort of rebate.
Personally I won't be going with anymore ATI cards, my Rage Fury Maxx is the
last.  When WSC comes out, I'm getting a whole new system, so I'm waiting until
then to change cards.

Doug,

The Radeon seems to be a very good card - probably the fastest available
outside of a GeForce2 Ultra.  Hardware sites are still keeping an eye on
driver development (ATI's historical weakness), but the card seems
fundamentally sound.  Take a look at
http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1302&p=1 for more info on the Radeon
All-in-Wonder.

I don't have N4, so take this for whatever it's worth.  I'm also hooked on the ATI
All-in-Wonder for it's TV capabilities, but I don't use it for any racing sims.  I
have 2 Voodoo2's in SLI mode for that.  This set-up works fine for everything _so
far_ -- GPL, F1CS, GP3, N3, etc.  I'm not sure how it would handle N4, although the
demo ran fine (only 1 car on screen though).

You might have problems finding a V2 (or two) now, but they're pretty cheap.  Just
an idea....

The ATI card blows. Try a V5 5500.
