Just got back from watching Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
I'm still going ....whoa!   The Matrix looks limp and lifeless
compared to CTHD.  If you are prone to motion sickness
tho...avoid this one.

I saw it a couple of times, it's indeed one of the best movies I ever
saw! Especially the fighting in the forest scene.. the music, the
filming, it's just perfect..
I believe the guy who did the fighting scenes was the same who did
them for the Matrix by the way.

Absolutely yes.  His name is Woo-ping Yuen and he was the kung fu
choreographer for The Matrix and the fight choreographer for Crouching
Tiger amoung many other films.  Look him up on the IMDB.

I haven't seen it yet, but from the commercials it's an obvious Matrix
rip-off.

As always, I'll wait for the DVD.  I don't do movie Theaters any more :)

Thanks for the tip!

I'm curious about this film, only because I'm not a big fan of Kung Fu
or "Fight" movies.  However, , it _is_ nominated for Best Picture.  So,
I figure that there's got to be more to it than special effects and
cinematography, but that's all they play up on the TV commercials.  If
so, what more does this movie have?

Can you give a short description/review?  I'm thinking of going to see
it, but don't want to waste my money on simply a good looking martial
arts flick.

Thanks.

It's a typical Oscar type winning show that doesn't pull it's weight in
the theatre.  It had promise, but reading subtitles for 2 hours doesn't
allow you to enjoy the movie.  It's more like reading a book.

If your sensitive to losing your comb, then see this film for sure!

Your girl-friend will love it -- maybe that says it all :)

Jason.

To you reading sub-titles is what turns you off from a movie?  Did they go
too fast for you?  After 5 or 10 minutes, I did not even realize I was
reading them anymore.. it just came automatically.  My wife and I went to
watch the VCD again the other night and it actually surprised me when the
subtitles came on. I had completely forgot the movie had them.

This movie is just a great story all the way around. There is romance,
action, drama.. and I do not think I have ever seen fight sequences that
just drew you in to them like these do..

Ever read the Dark Elf Series by RA Salvatore with Drizzt?  The way the
books have you imagining how he fights with his dual scimitars?  This is
that on film.

Now I hope that Lord of the Rings is as good as I am hoping.

Hi Cliff,

It's just that you have to "move" your eyes to read the lines, then
"move" them back up to watch the emotion in the actors eyes.  It doesn't
allow you to just watch, and enjoy the movie.

This may sound lame, maybe I don't read as fast as you.  I remember
reading stories in high-school and could only get 30 pages done a night
when others did 100.  I kept reading and re-reading sections just to
make sure I understood everything.

The fighting sequences were good, but some of the story was lame.  Why
would the girl take on bandits just for a comb?  I would understand if
it was a comb passed down by generations.  Even then, why is she playing
with it?  The story just didn't seem to fit right in some places.  It's
probably the culture.

I can see what you mean about the reading.  I tend to think of myself as a
good reader. I read alot of books.  However, my wife can read 2x as fast as
I do. She reads as fast a speedreader even though she does not actually
speed read (speedreaders tend to skip words and only pick out the important
ones.. she reads them all but is still damn fast)

So I can see how different people may have different problems with the
sub-titles.

Another thing that may work in my favor is that my wife has a loss of
hearing so alot of times when we watch movies, we will turn subtitles on.  I
guess I am just used to them.

The fighting in crouching tiger is much more impressive. And crouching tiger
only had a budget of $12,5 million.

It was the matrix that ripped off asian fighting movies in the first place
btw.

All movies are subtitled in the netherlands.

We don't seem to have a problem with it. Why should you? It takes a little
getting used to but it's better than watching a movie in the wrong language.

Yea, dubbed movies are the worst. If one is not willing to put up with
subtitles then you are going to miss out on a lot of good movies of
the type that are rarely made in Hollywood.
