Who Remembers ICR2 ?

I loaded up ICR2 on my old P2 266 Laptop the other day. Just to see what it
was like to step back in time.
Had to make a boot disk to get it to run as Windows wasn't too keen on the
old timer.
It took about 2 Hours to get used to using the keyboard again, and get used
to Longbeach, but I ended up accidently getting sucked into it again.
I can remember always liking the feel of that game, and I remember being
amazed by how well it linked up through a 9600 Modem.
I Still think it was one of the best of its time.

I do!  I do!

I'd love a PAPY modern-day version, but alas that will never happen now.

Does anyone know where the Papy employee's went?

I really loved the "feel" of the game.  For me, having no wheel-spin or no
locking brakes wasn't a problem, as I told myself it simply was a CART title
with ABS and traction control.  Today, it's almost true of a modern OWRS
car.

OWRS doesn't have ABS orTC.  For that matter, they don't even use
semi-automatic gearboxes (still have to heel/toe that sucker).

Me too! This was the first title for us to complete a full-length
(although) oval race in via direct serial connect. Awesome, fun, ahead
of its time. "I'm Paul Page. From Papyrus, this is Indycar
Racing". ;-)

Never liked it.  Never felt like you were driving an indy car, but a city
bus, with its midcar pivot point.  Still have it though.

They don't need to lift when they shift, they just flat-foot it the whole
way through.

Sorry, I was more talking about the Champ cars from two or three years ago.
Being at the limit with ICR2 was really something to master.  At Vancouver,
going into the front stretch, you could start braking really late after that
fast right hander for the tight first corner, trail-brake and downshift
really fast.  Same thing happened into that last corner before the pitroad.
To be master Icr2, it wasn't "slow in - fast out" because of the lack of
wheel spin.  Since you couldn't lock the brake, each milisecond going at the
fastest speed possible was more an advantage than the milisecond
accelerating off a corner.

Yeah they have a system that cuts the power on upshifts.  Downshifts
are still the good old throttle-blip system tho.

I agree, especially with the Vancouver example.  ICR2 was probably the
only pre-GPL sim I ever actually managed to spin in.  I was fairly
surprised when I reinstalled it a bit ago and still managed to spin
off at every other corner at Laguna Seca.

Yep, I was never a fan of Papyrus around that time.  The Crammond games of
the time were far better (probably not according the typically ignorant,
self-centred Americans though..)....(joking..... :-P )

> I had both wheelspin AND locking brakes.  How did you NOT?

There wasn't wheelspin except on pitroad under like 30mph just so you can
get out of pitroad.  Wheels couldn't lock underbraking. The more pressure
the better, at the adverse of not being able to turn much (that heavy
feeling under braking with the weight shifting up front).

That doesn't mean you couldn't spin the car while accerating.  The cars in
Icr2 had lotsa HP.

Your memories are failing you! 8)

Sigh.  I do, but not with fond memories.  ICR1 was far kinder to me.
