IRC2 was my first online experience racing a friend over modem back in
97. We usually did 40 lap races at michigan having a ton of fun. Too
bad it actually was the last proper champcar game.

I liked the Papy stuff then and before, but when gp2 came out shortly
after icr2, icr2 was history for me.

GP2 was cool, but it didn't run on a 486, whereas I could run ICR2 in
hi-res mode on my 486 with everything turned on except track surface
textures (which were ugly anyway).

PC power was my only excuse for not getting into it.  Then again, GP4
is the best open wheel experience if you have the hardware for it.

Anybody could race GP2 with all the graphics on, at 25,6fps.  It would be
super smooth, without a single hiccup.    It would just take you 10 minutes
to do a lap on that x486 <G>

Yeah, I had P166 at the time and it ran OK in 320x200 but was a bit too slow
to play in 640x480.

I can never remember it being this smooth on my 486 back then.
Getting almost GPL like slides happening on some of those Longbeach
bends.Until I looked at the replays I didn't realise just how far the thing
was actually sliding.
Still having quite a bit of fun with it even using the Keys :-)
Those of you that still have a copy, and a couple of hours spare time, try
loading it up on the slowest machine that you have and let us know what you
think of it now.

Oh yeah, I still reinstall it from time to time.  Back in the 486 and
P-120 days I was still (*gasp*) using the keyboard and occasionally a
really antique serial port joystick (you know the type...square white
box, no auto-centering).  I fired it up for the first time with a
wheel not too long ago and was pretty amazed at how great of a sim it
still is.

Me too.  I had more problems with consistent car reactions in ICR2.  The car
would shift to sudden understeer without much warning.

Yep - Milwaukee and Louden were probably the most fun tracks in ICR games.  I
didn't like Nazareth much.<g>

It wouldn't be the first time...<g>
I may have to reload the game and try it again.

For me it was the snap oversteer coming off the throttle.

Oh yeah, I loved ICR2.  I'd like to run it again sometime, but a .357 round
went through the CD :-P

I impulse-bought Codemasters Race Driver2 last week and (ignoring the fact
I find steering by wheel impossible to set up so I'm happy with the feel)
the first track you race on is Laguna Seca.

As I was driving round, at the back of my mind I was using ICR2's
depiction of the track to help guide me. Ten years on that experience is
still useful. Maybe it's like girlfriends... you never quite forget the
first time, and ICR2 was one of the reasons I bought a PC.

Actually it was ICR... but apart from that my memory's 100% accurate ;-)
