hmmm.... are any "promising" racing titles confirmed for the XBox?
can't think of any myself.
I dunno what resolution HDTV is, but the 'box will let you run
2000x1800 or something like that on a regular monitor.
it has potential for being a serious asskicker in the audio
department, yeah. 256 3d-channels, I believe.
I can't wait for it. the in-game movies we've allready seen are
really incredible.

Although I think racing games still will suit the PC best, with all
the addons/hacks/mods and so on.

kidding?
won't argue with you on that one. but consoles are still the biz for
those late night drunken binges. Colin McRay 2 on the PSX is actually
really awesome at four in the morning after a few cases of suitable
***ic beverage with a handful of mates. these days we have GT3,
of course.
(damned! busted! lol)

Agreed. I actually considered a PSX a couple of years ago, just so my
and some mates could play soccer games when drinking. (ouch busted
too... :)

It's not the X-Box that will convince me to buy and X-Box, rather the games.
So far, I don't see anything that has aroused my interest. I'm taking a
wait and see attitude on this one. Certainly won't be camped out at Wal
Mart like I was the day the PS2 launched! And that wasn't worth it, it
wasn't until two months ago that I began to see a few worthwhile games come
the PS2's way. Of course the learning curve shouldn't be as much of an
obstacle where the X-Box is concerned.

There was a magazine that had a comparision of nascar heat for the ps2 and
also Xbox. The added detail in the track surface, fencing, etc was very
noticiable. Plus the AA was clearly better. Xbox graphically at least,
will be a superior console, but the first reviews of release titles for the
unit seem lackluster.

If you didn't have or couldn't afford a top-of-the-range PC, then the
arguments for getting an X-Box or a PS2 are extremely strong, but if you are
committed to PC ownership and prefer PC-type games, there's little to gain
by getting an X-Box.
A few of the obvious weaknesses of the X-Box - not upgradeable, limited
storage space, low tv resolutions, the discomfort of playing in front of a
TV instead of at a desk, games aimed at children, limited memory etc.
The list of things you can do on a PC which will never be possible on the
X-Box is endless - you can use 3DS Max to create your own models, animations
and films, use a massive variety of programming language to create your own
applications, use DirectX and OpenGL to make your own multimedia
applications, demos or even games, run your business with MS Office, design,
create and maintain your own website, manage an e-business, race 1967 F1
cars, record samples and create your own digital music, play System Shock 2
etc.
Also DirectSound3D is only one speaker short of dolby digital.

you seem to forget a whole bunch of people that want to play console
games. :)
that may well be a sreangth,
1920x1080 is low tv-resolution?
a common misunderstanding. it should read "the comfort of playing
from the couch". besides, nothing'll stop you from playin at your
desk if you want.
bull.
I'll give you one point for that one. :)
yeah. and the list of things you can do in a real car, which will
never be possible on a PC is equally endless. who cares? it's a
_***_ system for chrissakes!
eh?
why is it that so many people think you have to choose between one or
the other?

Your CPU may be 40% faster, but is the game you're playing written for your
CPU? The benefit of the Xbox is that it's a fixed system. A developer can
take advantage of the entire system. They don't need to target their game
for Mr and Mrs Smith of Green Bay who only have a 300mhz Celeron with an ATI
Rage.
DirectSound3D is 4-speaker. Dolby Digital is 5.
Not upgradeable is not a strength. Having a guaranteed feature set is great
for developers, until the hardware becomes outdated. CPU's double in speed
every 18 months, video card every 12 months. Any hardware in the X-Box will
soon be out of date.
Also, having a guaranteed feature set is an advantage, but it's not really
that difficult to write program that benefit from whatever hardware is in a
PC.
The games on PS1, PS2, N64 and Dreamcast are definitely not aimed at 25+ so
why should X-Box be any different? You think anyone would ever make a game
like GPL on the X-Box?
Playing on a couch is not comfortable if you want to use an FF steering
wheel with pedals.
