Can anyone tell me if the Macintosh version of Indy Car Racing II will
run on a PowerBook 5300cs? If so, is it playable performance wise?
Thanks,
Robert

Don't waste your time. You need a _really_ high end Mac to get full
enjoyment. It's unplayable on my 7100/66.

Gee whiz ! 12 fps with 70% of the textures....Whoaa, I am NOT impressed.
Now I know for sure I made the right choice to buy a PC for games!
Explain this to me, Mr molinari..(not a flame, just curious) Why is it
that my measly pentium 75 does 16 frames with the same setup in SVGA
(sometimes down to 10 in racing, but I guess it's the same for the mac)
while my 7200/90 L2 cache 40 megs memory won't even come close ?
Did apple and motorola lie about the prowesses of the PPC chip ? Is it a
videa problem ? Can't people program efficiently for the mac anymore ?
All the ports I have seen lately run like hogs on my mac while they scream
texture mapping, the mac is...out of the picture, do you know the tech
reasons?) Thanks in advance, I'm sure you have a couple ideas on the
matter ! GREg.

The 601 compares better to a P75 or P90! But not in price,
unfortunately.

Well, on the last point you hit the nail. Actually, it is not
that people cannot program for the mac but that they cannot port to the
mac. Look at teh difference in frame rate and quality between Doom and
Marathon (or better yet Hexen). The features these games and CPU power
they should require vary little but the ID software simply is not done
right. For example, I can run Hexen at an acceptable rate as long as
there is no VM on. As soon as it is on the game slows down immensely.
Now, Marathon runs with very little difference between VM and no VM.
I think another proble is Macs failure (even the game sprockets
don't do this yet) to fully support the video drivers. The graphics
accelerators in a 7200 do not work with VM on. No one at Apple has ever
come up with a reason fro this. The Valkyries video paging is only
supported by Bungie apps. At least the memory mapping should have been
available to everyone. All of the 7500 and better machines have video
paging, again unsupported at the OS level (although the sprockets provide
limited support).
OTOH, there are pieces that run just fine on a 601 (better than
low end pentiums). I can run Descent with everything Maxed on a
7100/66. I cannot do this on a P75 (and enjoy playing).
I am probably in big trouble now since the guy who ported Indy II
is reading this thread.

I just got ICRII for my Mac 7100/80 and I must say, after waiting for a
year for this great moment I am totally devestated. What a waste. What,
do I have to go and buy a 180Mz Powercomputer to use this program? I get
8 to 10 Fps with only basic graphics. Too bad they don't tell you this on
the box.
So now, from ***ing to solutions: can more vram or a graphics card help?
More ***in:
Just why would you program this for 70% graphics at 12 frames? Why not
100% at 20? This seems bogus to me.
I am disgusted.

help?
In my opinion, the best price/performance upgrade you can make is to add an
256k or 512k cache (I assume you don't already have one, and can add one to
the 7100). It sped up my 7500 by about 15% to 20% for games. Cost is about
$125, if I remember correctly.
I hope you can find a solution, because the game is great once you get to a
satisfactory frame rate.
We would have loved to be able to make the game run on every Mac out there,
it's just not possible.
