Indy Car Racing II performance tips

1.The game itself runs at 256 it seems, however if you've got system
colors set to thousands or millions the game sucks big time.   I find it
rather "unpolished" that one has to set monitor colors manually to 256,
but oh well.

2. I flipped the windshield toggle to off as Bert Molinari suggested.
That little switch increased framerate by 1-3fps.   "W" (thanks Bert)

3. Also, the sound for ICR II is pitiful--it sounds as if the engine
noises are coming from the car down the street.   Consequently, I set the
system sound output via the Monitors and Sound cdev to 11.025kHz.

With a field of 15/7 drawn ahead/2 behind and grass textures, asphalt
textures, grandstand textures, horizon textures OFF I consistently get
17-27fps.   Great for me!

BTW, do you know why the sound is sooo bad?   Muted, even one's own engine
sounds distant.   I find Al Unser, Jr.'s sound to be so much better,
though the gameplay cannot/should not be compared.

I read news articles and the official readme's.   Any other performance
increase tips are welcome.
