GPL. What should I expect?

Hi all,

Been out of the simracing mode for awhile, but am planning to get back to it
when GPL hits the shelves.

I have a P200MMX w/64ram and a Monster 3DFX. What is a ballpark figure on
framerates with this setup?

BTW, I did drive the demo on a friend of a friends PC a couple of weeks back
for about 15 minutes. His system doesn't tell me anything as the lucky
bastard has a PII400. :) Except for the fact that it's <very> fast. :) I am
really looking forward to learning the physics modeling of the cars.

Thanks.

You will get satisfactory performance.  It will slow down when the dirt starts
flying in
your rearview mirrors :)  but you can turn the smoke/dirt effect off.

Just having a 3Dfx card will make it very playable.

It works fine on my P2/333 too, with all graphics on :)
Too bad I only have a Monster1 card :(

Jason.

The *demo* will run smoothly on this setup. It does on my P166MMX
(overclocked to 188MHz) with 48 MB and a Monster 1. I can't say
anything about framerates, as the demo doesn't have a counter. It
feels like mid-twenties, however, no matter which screen resolution.

The finished sim will feature AI opponents, however, which will also
use up computing power. I believe that your (and mine) system will
meet the minimum requirements for GPL, but I think we'll both feel a
strong urge for upgrading once it hits the shelves. ;)

I think I will buy a K6-2/300, which fits into my current mainboard,
and a 64MB stick of SD-RAM. Both will be dirt cheap by the time I will
actually need them - after the recent clash at Papyrus, I don't forsee
GPL coming out prior to the Christmas season.

Your system should run the demo ok, but once your running with other cars in the full
version I'd say you'd want about a PII300 + voodoo II or Rendition 2200.
