Too many racing sim developers hide their heads in the sand and don't want
to or are too afraid to see what the opposition does to develope something
better because it really takes an effort to come up with something
revolutionary! I won't name any other titles than the one below (because I
want to stay positive :) but I think we all know the short comings of sim
releases that have come out after-98.

I think the only game that has really satisfied me in the final release is
GPL and that was 2 years ago! It wasn't/isn't  perfect but it was more than
I expected in the year of -98! Hell, I even played the demo more than any
other game I had installed on my system!   With the patches introducing FF
and better online play I'm safe to say it's the best racing sim around and a
lot of its long time appeal is not alone due to its excellent driving
model but also because of its online capabilities. No other racing game
since the release of GPL has in my eyes been a sim because it really raised
the benchmark of what a racing a sim is about. It not only made us expect
quality but also demand it.

To make it short: - So I'm not really too surprised about the comments about
the F1 sims released this year.. <g>

The goal of a developer is to make money, not do "something revolutionary".
GPL was revolutionary, and it lost money for Sierra. Do you really think
other developers are going to look at what Sierra/Papyrus did with GPL as a
model for producing software?

Sierra could publish a book on the subject of "How to publish a great
simulation and lose a ton of money in the process". They could also tell the
world "How to publish the same game five times in five years and make money
every year just by improving the graphics" based on their NASCAR series'
success.

Don't blame the other developers for not trying to emulate GPL's "success".
Blame Sierra for causing other publishers to steer clear of anything
remotely resembling "the most realistic driving experience on a PC".

Do you really think that GP3 would have sold any less (than it prpbably
will) if it would have been more of a new game than a facelift to GP2? With
it's many driving aids it still would have been easy for beginners and
challenging for *** simmers. I just feel it's sad that for example
Crammond totally ignores what the opposition does!

I do understand that the business is a bout making $$$ and lots of it but
too many times we see mediocre ***coming out sometimes because of ignoring
what's happening in the outside world  and sometimes because being hurried
out to make a certain release date!  Sounds like legally ripping of people
of their money!  With more quality games with good manuals etc. (and a demo
before release damn it :) I'm sure that more people would be willing to pay
for the full product!

IT seems to be more of a standard nowdays to expect that the FINAL  game is
something that we will have to patch many times before it even works and
still not be happy with it.

Thank god for developers having the courage to try and do something new! How
are we supposed to get any better sims if the developers don't try to raise
the bar? And it's easier to do a better product if you don't just improve
your own results but raise their quality above others too. GP3 brought us
great weather, lets hope the next sim we get also has that and more in it.

Yep, those are in the same category but I think N3 was even more of a face
lift than GP3 to GP2 ! Dunno about Nascar1 though as it was the 1st of the
papy Nascar series. :)
NLegends included too in the facelifts.. more like a car addon. I really
hope N4 will be more as it will have an improved(!) gpl physics engine. Lets
hope it's true.

F1 2000 wasn't a facelift but it sure needs one!  ;o) ...and a lot of
optimization of the code. It has potential but it was hurried out by EA as a
very buggy test version <g>.

Ubisoft products.. err..

Actually I like GP3 as a game when playing offline and it has some very good
(as well as some annoying) features but it doesn't have what it takes to
really want me to spend a lot of time with it in the long run. I do however
have fun with it atm but I doubth it will last long. I think if it had
working internet multiplay I would forgive some of it's short comings more.
The dual axis bug makes me wonder if they actually beta tested the thing
with anyone actually having a dual axis setup? 4 years of development and
they don't get dual axis to work???

It's just that I did expect a bit more of the 2 latest F1 sim attempts in
the year of 2000. If GP3 would have been released on it's original
announced release date sometime in -98 ( ? :) when the expectations weren't
as high as today I think it would have got less bad feedback. GP2 and ICR2
were both good sims when they were 1st released but if something like that
came out now I don't think it would satisfy todays simmers because their
expectations are higher.

Yes, and sometimes it's seems that the beta versions aren't even beta tested
before release...  <g>

>any game that has to be patched, should have never been released,
>thats why they make beta versions.

But is it realistically possible to catch *every* bug?  I don't think so.
There are too many different combinations(hardware/OS) for that to happen.
