GPL patches & understeer?

by Matthew Birger Knutse » Fri, 01 Oct 1999 04:00:00

Guys, let me say that this may be me....and driving too little GPL
lately :)

But -. after the 03 patch and the new ride height, I had serious probs
with understeer in the sense that the car "washes out" sideways.
Especcially in high speed corners - like Woodcote at Silverstone. If you
enter at the limit, you could usually control it on the gas, and correct
it. Now I feel like it doesn't help to give it full whack on the gas or
a heave of lock on the wheel, it only seems to help if I slow down.
Tried a lot of setups, but get the same result. I used to be able to
turn in, and balance the tail out nicely on the throttle, now I only get
push, then too much oversteer, and when I let up to give some grip back
to the front, the front yaws around as if there were a set of small
wheels or a mechanic's board stuck under the car. Hmmm, maybe this is my
problem?

Tried both the Ferrari and the Lotus....

Any thoughts?

Can't wait to give 1.2 a whizz online, though!  :-)

Making your excuses for our little hotlap comp already eh Matt?

GPL patches & understeer?

by David Mocn » Fri, 01 Oct 1999 04:00:00

Hi Matt,
Yes, with the taller rideheight the cars understeers a lot more than with
lower ride. I find that you totally have to change your set-ups to make the
car work. All my "hotlaps" are are actually with 1.1 and I find that I'm
actually a little bit quicker than with the lower-ride height. If you want,
I'll send you some 'tall" setups and give them a do. Though few tips:

- If you want the back to be loser, then give the back more positive toe at
the back. Also, raise the rear tyre pressure (lower front if youy need to).

-Another thing, if your back is coming around under braking than it is because
of your spring/height/damper settings (brake bias needs to be further front
now). The Dampers make a huge difference now as far as the stability under
braking goes.

Do you want my setups?
Regards,
David Mocnay

Try looking at what Richard Nunn says about spring rates and arbs Matt

he cured that exact problem for me ... and now the car is better than ever

his great site is  http://website.lineone.net/~richardn/

I had that same understeer when I first tried the US patch. I tried
the Ferrari at Monaco and I was getting bad understeer through the
tunnel and T1. I tried playing around with the setup and that cured
it. Then I quit the game and changed some settings in core.ini went
back and tried Kyalami with my old 1.1 setup. The car felt perfectly
normal. I changed all the values in core.ini back to their old values
and tried again. The handling was normal.

Have to try Monaca again tomorrow. I suspect that it might've been my
setup, it was a little "pushy" before but not by that much. Well,
maybe I was just imagining things because the car felt normal at
Kyalami. :)

It's great! We had 20-player field in Finnish GPL Championship
practise race and it was really smooth! No warping at all and with the
new synch method the collision detection is so much better. I thought
we were racing on LAN. :)

Could you please fill us in in more detail what changes you did in core.ini
that resulted with better handling ?

I gave the 1.2 a try yesterday and I didn't notice any difference in the
handling.

I don't think that those changes affected the handling because I
changed them back to normal and it felt the same. But I tried enabling
and disabling the steer_ratio. I don't know if that works in 1.2
anymore because I didn't notice a difference. Then I tried changing
the synch_method, that shouldn't affect single player but you never
know (especially after the 1.1 patch).

As I said, after tweaking with them I changed them back to normal and
there was no difference.
