Any wheel have analog HAND gas/brake controls ?

by Lorne Glustei » Wed, 05 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Hey Guys,
I`m looking to replace my old Thrustmaster GP1 wheel. It has
analog paddels that you control with your hands for gas/brake
(thumb buttons for shifting). I`m trying to find a good wheel that
allows the shifting paddels to be used as analog gas/brake
controlls (it would need to have thumb buttons for shifting).
I like the idea of having traditional floor pedals as well.... but
I [need] the wheel to offer analog hand controls as an option.

I cant find any wheel (other than the Thrustmaster Sprint)
that offers this control combo. . .

Anyone know of one that does ?

Thanks for your time,
All the best,
Lorne

The Guillemot Ferrari Force Feedback wheel has 4 paddles behind the wheel.
The 2 upper ones are for shifting and the 2 lower ones can be used for
braking and accelerating when the pedals are not connected..

I think TSW makes a wheel with hand controls.

Any wheel have analog HAND gas/brake controls ?

by Andy Jone » Wed, 05 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Yep, I've trodden this path.

I replaced my GP1 with a TM Sprint - and if anything it's better, split axis
on the gas/brake - very useful for GPL ! Pedals were useless though, too
small, too light (and only single axis I think)

I now have a Guillemot Ferrari FF, as Sjon said, 4 paddles behind the wheel,
so useable, but nowhere near as comfortable in that mode as the TM. Also the
wheel has a larger lock than the TM, and as you will know, paddle control at
high lock is one of the few disadvantages of hand controls.

Since getting the Guillemot, I've found it easier to persevere with the
pedals than to try to adapt to the 4 paddle solution. The thumb buttons on
the front of the Guillemot are not so easy to reach as on the TM, making
(for my hands at least) a paddle + buttons solution a stretch.

I like the Guillemot pedals - the wheel I'm ambivalent about, but the pedals
are fine !

Any wheel have analog HAND gas/brake controls ?

by Lorne Glustei » Wed, 05 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Thanks guys,
TSW has stopped making a wheel with analog hand controls (would
have been out of my price range anyway). I noticed the Guillemot
Ferrari FF had two sets of paddels but I wasnt sure how you could
shift and throttle/brake with your hands with those controls in one
location (I didnt think you could use the thumb buttons for shifting
because of their location and I think one of them is a hat switch ?).
Anyway, after reading Andy`s post I now have a very good idea of
what this wheel would be like to live with and I think I "might" like it.
The only downside is that it may be a little out of my price range, and
I dont have a real need for FF. That brings me to this question: Would
you guys happen to know if the Thrustmaster Nascar Pro Digital Racing
Wheel`s paddle shifters are analog ?.  If not I may just get the Sprint, it
seems like a good wheel for the very low price....and I would only be
using the floor pedals for fun arcade races anyway.... I need hand
controls for serious racing  ;)  I could always use the Sprint until
something comes out that I really like.

All the best,
Lorne

Any wheel have analog HAND gas/brake controls ?

by Hamme » Wed, 05 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Dude, I'm glad you asked this question, because I'm a hands-only ***
as well, and soon to be in the same position of needing a non-TM
replacement wheel.

I was fortunate enough about a year ago to need a new GP1, so I bought
*three* at one time, as I was racing a lot at that time and would
rather lose a lung than be without a wheel.  Turns out, it was a smart
move.  I have been through one, and am about halfway through the 2nd,
with only one in reserve.  Seeing how TM is no longer doing wheels,
(and FF might be fun) I'm going to be looking for a solution as you
are.  Pedals are tough for me too because I'm too big for the desk I
have and I don't have the room under the desk, nor the dexterity I
desire.  I just don't like 'em.

If you wouldn't mind, it would be educational if you could post our
satisfaction (or lack thereof) of the solution you chose.  That 4-
paddle thing sounds a bit scary LOL.

Thanks.

Hey Hammer,
Yeah... I could never find the "right" position behind my desk with
floor pedals either. That GP1 wheel can really grow on ya !!!
I cant see how I could drive better with any other wheel. I do a
mod to firm up the bungie and it`s perfect. I`m on my third (and last)
one and I expect it to fail at any time (already had to clean the throttle
pot 2 months ago). I hope I can find something soon... I may just pick
up a Sprint from www.thrustmaster.com on special for $34 and use
it until I can find something better.

All the best,
Lorne

If you wouldn't mind, could you share your mod for tightening up the
bungie??  Thanks.

NP... When look at the bungie you will notice that it has a soft
plastic stopper on each end that rests against the firm plastic
"stops" ... just pull on the bungie and attach something
to act as a larger stopper on each end :)

Any wheel have analog HAND gas/brake controls ?

I haven't seen the rest of this thread, but the Guillemot/Ferrari wheel
has analogue gas and brake "pedals" as well as the digital gear
paddles. And, of course, force feedback.

Any wheel have analog HAND gas/brake controls ?

I used a GP1 without pedals for quite a while, until TEN opened up.  One
long Dega race and my hands couldn't take it. The "will" to go faster meant
I was squeezing that gas paddle for all it's worth and my fingers paid the
price.
