Nascar 99 don't bother!

Picked up Nascar 1999 today, and will return it tomorrow.  The main
reason I bought it was for Win98 support.  (I have a Diamond Monster
Sound)  It has Win98 support, but NO MULTIPLAYER support with the
Win9x install.  Talk about stupid, can't believe this was done by the
same people that did GPL.

I'm still gonna grab it but you are 100% correct tho. Nascar 2 is the only
thing holding me back from not having to have SB dos compatability. You just
would have thunk this would have been able to put that to rest and opened
some doors for me. I to play networked and there really are quite a few
people I know that fall in this exact same situation.

I did multiplayer NR1999 last night. I have a P5-200MMX/3dfx and
my friend has a P5-133/3dfx. We both selected the DOS 3dfx
install. When the game runs, you do not go to DOS or reboot at
all. It runs in a DOS box just fine. In fact go to the shortcut properties
and uncheck the "DOS as needed" box. The game really ran great
and is not a big deal as you might expect. The last issue for me
will be if a MS-FF wheel will work in this game. I'll probably pick
one up today. But I sure don't want to be swapping between
my T2 and the MS-FF, that would be just crazy.

In Win9x mode, yes (but no force feedback).

In DOS mode, no.  That screws those of us running NROS.

Um. It does work in DOS. At least it does in Illinois :-)

Just don't recal your wheel :)

BtW... Even the Win95 version won't recognize most of the buttons on the
MSFFW.  It won't even recognize the damned shift paddles!

Someone needs to 'help' Papyrus learn how to program Controller Input...

You can program the paddle shifters to use keystrokes instead of joystick
buttons.  I use the right paddle (PgUp) for up shifting and the right paddle
(PgDn) for down shifting.

The wheel comes with a profile for NascarRacing2 which works
just fine. The paddles shift gears and the 6 buttons on the
wheel are programed for the useful Function keys.

Aha!  I'll give this a try.  Thanks :)

It would still be better if Papy would pay attention to this area a bit
better...

No way, if Papy set a standard somewhere (second to the car physics),
it's
the controller setup! If all racing sims/games would follow Papyrus
concept,
I'd have a much easier time switching between them...

Methinks you give them more credit than they deserve in this department
:)

Papy products are the _only_ products I've ever had controller problems
with.

Well, except for that TOTALLY stupid Test Drive 4, which doesn't even
remember your controller settings between program launches.  Now _that_
was stupid!

I consider NOT supporting split axis for gas and brakes a major flaw in
the controller support. This was the case with most sims except
Papy's...

BTW, lots of people have problems with their controllers and Papy sims,
but 99% are caused by the people... ;^)
Of course, this one percent was my problem with MS FF wheel and N2! ;^)

So because papy supports split axis, they get an atta-boy? Huh.

Hmm, yes. The split axis is just an example of the flexibility of Papy's
setup. I could even use a joystick axis for shifting gears, try that in
ANY other controller setup. Compare it to the braindead method in CPR:
For each joystick button you have to select a game action, so only
buttons
can be used. Just give the user a list of game actions and let the user
hit ANYTHING (well, almost) on his controllers. That way you can use ANY
keyboard, button or axis for any game action. Duh.

BTW, not supporting split axis in racing sims is as DUMB as not
supporting
a throttle in a flight sim...it's a MAJOR feature.
