: }Really, what's wrong with enacting mandatory insurance?  Would you rather
: }be hit by some uninsured motorist?  What does this really have to do with
: }conservatives vs. liberals anyway?

: It raises the cost of insurance, of bodywork, of parts, etc.  And
: doesn't solve the problem of uninsured motorists. (The local paper
: claims 25% of SE PA drivers are uninsured)

In high school, a friend of mine was hit by an uninsured driver.  He promptly
hired a lawyer and sued the state under the reasoning that it is their
responsibility to enforce the law.  He made a bundle.

Otherwise, I think the mandatory insurance law is crap.  The billing
period in which it was enacted saw a massive increase in insurance premiums.
Not 2 years later, I was hit by some drunk driver who figured he only had to
sign up, then cancel every six months to get "the card" and thereby avoid any
tickets/license suspension.  Didn't help me very much (sued the bastard
and he declared bankruptcy and claimed it was a white supremecy plot,
alternately...)
