GPL - Sound quality and fps

by Graeme Nas » Fri, 23 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hi all,

As always, I'm sorry if this is old news, but today I was messing around
with the app.ini file in the \sierra\gpl directory and I noticed that by
setting the sound quality to 0 my framerate improved by around 3-4fps
during a race. It now hardly ever drops below 30fps even with 10 AI and
all textures on (this is on an MMX P200).
And I didn't notice any difference in the sound quality during the game!
(although you could attribute this to my lame sound card, I dunno)

As ever, though, there's a downside........ The sound disappears
completely as soon as I drive for the second time, either second race,
second practice, or whatever. Hopefully I'll get a handle on it in time
but GPL is still amazing without sound and those with lower end systems
like mine might want to consider it. They might not even suffer from
this problem - it could just be me!

Cheers!

Errr...? Dunno what car you chose to drive, but I can't see myself beatin'
da sh*& out of my Ferrari without actually hearing it yowl and suffer.
Driving a sim that is so accurate without getting all possible (physical-)
feedback (the way I crank up my speakers it I MEAN physical feedback) is a
PITA. I think I'd rather stick with loosing 3 fps. Luckily, my system is
strong enough to handle the whole thing with all maxed.

I get rage inside me every time someone posts that their system can handle
GPL maxed out.  My gills turn green.  I now have a small doll with the name
tag Mea***er clearly attached to the front.  I also have a collection of
needles.  On for each time my FPS drops below 36.

The funniest part is when people most that their P200 MMX + Voodoo1
can run everything maxed at 36 fps.  Hah!  Give me a break....

Heyhey, I  just wanted to say that I wouldn`t wanna miss a thing about this
sim and that I'm happy that I don't have to. Didn't mean to p*** anyone off.
Sorry 'bout that.

WOW, great framerate with a P200.
Please give some more details, I guess I can improve my settings too.

I have set the sound quality to zero, too, so far, no problems
at all. Works great.  I can start races, practice, go start some
more races, no prob, so I guess it might be a problem with your
machine. My setup:

amd k6-200 o/c'ed to 250, 83Mhz Bus
96 MB Ram EDO
AWE32 PnP ISA
DMVoodoo I, Viper V330 AGP.
