What he is trying to say is, that he wants to connect a remote person on a
phone line to his IPX network game with his buddies in the same room.

Made sense to me.

Hi All,
Okay, let me replay to this for the last time (I hope).  The save
game option was left out because we didn't have time to do it.  Not
because we wanted to make it more "sim" like, not because anyone said we
had to, not because we can't stand the thought of people using the game
like they want.  It was purely a resource/time decision.  We decided to
have some other features in the game instead of the save race option.  I
know there are many of you who are upset with that decision and I am sorry
about that.  Unfortunately, because of the nature of the feature, it would
be difficult to implement in a patch.  I am not saying it will "never"
happen, just that we don't have any plans as of right now.  I appreciate
all your criticisms and responses regarding this problem.  Keep other
suggestions coming.

YEP that's sorta what I mean. But not only that. I would like to take
our group and with one phone line call into KALI for ex. and have all
of us networked at home be able to play on KALI with just one
connection. Now if I had to pay the initail registration fee for each
pc that's no biggy.

I guess I could be clearer.

I have a home network. Lets say 1 of those computers calls KALI for
example. Now I can connect the 1 pc that called. But since I have
another 3 networked locally at home, with that one phone line can I
then bring all of us into Kail on 1 phone connection?

Otherwise you would need 4 phone lines and each call in and hook up
seperatley. A person I talk with at Kali thought it maybe possible to
do, but had no such case yet doing it.

That could be a problem, since it pauses the game for everyone.  I
know it would really mess up my timing if i was shoulder-to-shoulder
with somebody in the tri and somebody hit the pause key on me... :-/

Adam,

How about some sort of toggle to force it to use the 4-bit car set
even if you have 24+ MB RAM?  I have 32 meg, but I find the 8 bit car
set is just too much of a performance killer on some tracks
(especially pheonix!), so I have to either run under Windows or do
some tricks with my memory manager to keep it from loading the 8-bit
cars.

Or better yet, just optimize the damn thing so that it runs as well as
rendition ICR2 <g>

The only thing I can say is "experience".  laps, laps, and more laps.
doing anything short of this is not going to matter much.  Granted,
setting a car up for short runs versus long ones makes a difference.
And only after running 45 laps with an 80 lap pit window and having
your tires melt away, are you gonna realize your setup is out of
there.

that's not just beginners, that's anyone, including you and I both.
no, that's not a learn to be better drivers, that's just experience in
knowing how to do something.  The more you mess with *anything* the
better you will get at it.  Granted, some people are naturals at some
things, but not the majority.

If they're running TCP/IP at home, and if you can connect to, say, an
internet provider and all 3 computers can use the internet (but they
will share the total bandwidth), then you are probably good to go.
However, I am not totally familiar with Kali.  Is that a dial-up
process or an internet accessible type connection?  (reason I ask is
for TCP/IP or some other protocol necessary for your networked
connections to talk to the other network)

Actually John, I think I understand a little more what you mean, (now
that I finally have N2 and have raced with it).  A save race in
progress option, not necessarily during the race, but at least the
race weekend, would be a nice feature.

such as, after qualifying, save the race weekend, then come back the
next day and warmup, and possibly race.

that would be very helpful...

Mike,

I've got a cure for your phone interuptions during multiplayer racing.

1. Hook your modem up to your normal phone line.  Add *70 to turn off
call waiting and no one can bug you.

2. If your on a local network and the phone rings, let the machine get
it!  You've got to consider your priorities!!

Would the following save procedure satisfy _most_ needs?

After a session you can save and go on to the next session later.
During a race you can hit pause, then save, and you restart exactly from
the pause, just as if you unpaused.

Those must be trivial to implement in a patch.  I know people want
more, but would the no frills approach be worth doing???

Probably.

If this was indeed "trivial" as you state, do people here not think we
would have implemented it in the first place? It's not trivial; if it
were, you'd already have it...

Jim - I honestly thought it would be trivial to do a brute force save and
restore of memory.  Huge file, and all that.  I guess not.

Please accept my apology.  No need to reply.

Dont get me wrong here but the game is great. I love it but for
medical reasons I just can not sit in front of my computer for more
than 15-20 minutes. I have to at least stand up then for 10 minutes or
more as I have spinal problems. To me I need the save game feature as
it does not take a genius to work out how long it would take me to do
a 100% race. Its got nothing to do with anyone including me if people
want to use it as a cheat feature. I dont use it as a cheat as I like
to play it as it comes but all the same its up to the individual how
they want to play. I am not one who demands this and demands that. I
just respectfully ask Sierra Papyrus to take into consideration some
of us who are unlucky enough not to be able to use our computers for
as long as some..
