Was this ever discussed? Geoff Crammond's original F1GP would get my
vote. First sim to utilise the Internet, first sim to have addons,
editors and utils developed for it... not to mention that fact that it's
a cracking good F1 sim!

Still raced in offline leagues on the Amiga and PC today! I'm not sure
even the original NASCAR Racing or maybe even GPL will last that long.

DTR blaggers need not reply :)

My brother had F1 GP on his ST.  Was really good fun and considering other
games that were available maybe better for its time than GP2 was when it
came out.

I would have to go with GPL though due to the fact that it is so realistic.

Hehe:)

Hey what about Bill Elliot's NASCAR Challenge, it ran on my 386. :)

GPL - no doubt. For all the reasons mentioned in countless previous
posts.

I guess GPL would be the outright winner of such an award, but if we're
talking relative to the technology available at the time then
I agree with you entirely. F1GP was a huge milestone for racing sims.

Rick.

It was good apart from the AI speeds.
I remember lapping the entire field at the US GP the first time I ever raced
there

I think it would be "Indianapolis 500 - The Simulation".  Brings back
some great memories.

What puts it over the top?  It was programmed entirely in assembler.
So it was ***y fast.  It ran on my 8086 (8 MHz) with no problems. I
really think it revoluationized racing simulations and thus F1GP et al
were born.  The physics were outstanding considering it ran on an
8086.

Well, if we're getting into Sim Racing archeology here...

...Some people may remember, way back in the mists of time when an IBM PC
came with 64K of RAM and a tape interface as standard a program called Revs.
This was a simulation of the British Formula 3 championship, had all the
major UK circuits in, benefitted from the input of a real life, sucessful
(in
British F3 anyway) racing driver, and was held in awe for the accuracy of
both its physics and circuit layouts. It ran on a BBC Micro (32K or 64K RAM,
1MHz
6502 processor - say about the same level of technology as an Apple II).

The author?

One Geoff Crammond...

I think that F1GP was written before Indy 500 (it was released on the Amiga
& Atari ST long before it made it to the PC).

If we're talking about ground breakers though, then Geoff Crammond's first
racing sim, Revs, should get the award IMO. This was the first attempt to
actually simulate a form of racing (British F3) rather than produce a
racing based arcade game.

Cheers,
Richard

TIME Magazine would probably pick "Pole Position".

"Racing Sim of the Century".

Give me a break.

Hey, I don't use that phrase, but you made me do it!!!

I wonder what the racing sim of the previous century was?

Oh well, still one more year to go...

Maybe Gran Turismo 2000 will be the racing sim of the twentieth century.

I'd have to say one of the games I played alot was a game
called "Revs" for the Commodore 64. I believe Geoff Crammond had
a hand in that game before Grand Prix/World Circuit.

God, I remember downloading the demo of this game before it was released. It
was an undrivable (!) version of San Marino. I watched it for hours and
drooled like a mad person. As I recall it was released *just* in time for
X-mas. I  had a friend pick the game up for me on Xmas Eve '92 (is that
right?). Changed my life forever!

No, TIME magazine would find that GP2 had a huge number of
votes, so they'd remove it from the list altogether.
(based on what they did with the person of the century)

cheers...

PC Powerplay voted GPL number 5, in the game of the century, GP2 was
11. Gpl outscored some big time games, unusual for a games mag, with
Quake no. 1. GPL will always get my vote though, even though GP/GP2
were both great.

Wandering way of topic here...

Well, I'm not familiar with the particular sequence of events at TIME,
so I would assume TIME forgot to specify anything in the requirements
that indicated a requirement that the person be "positive", and so a
lot of people voted for one of the most visible noted people in
twentieth century history--often considered an embodiment of evil,
known for his manipulation of the masses through the media.

And so TIME was forced to explicitly make Bill Gates ineligible for the
vote.

Adrian.
