Gameport question

I've got an old P-II rig that my kids use for their games.

It has a Diamond MX 400 soundcard in it.  However, it recently lost it's
gameport function.  Sound still works fine, gameport is still listed in the
device manager, but any controller hooked up to it shows "not connected."

Any ideas?  Is it possible to for just the gameport function of a sound
card to break, but the rest of the card works fine?

  Thanks.

Anythings possible John, but more than likely you have a software/driver problem.  A cheap
replacemtn card if you can't sort it out can be had for probably $20 or less.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking too, though why it suddenly started,
who knows.  Think I'll just pick up a cheap Soundblaster and be done with
it.
Can only take, "Is it fixed yet?" questions for so long<G>

Yup, its possible for the gameport to go poof and everything else be ok. Is
it possible to try checking the 'Poll with interrupts enabled' in the
Windows | Game controllers setup? I have had to jiggle with this setting in
the past to get controllers to work on older gameport/soundcards...

I've had that problem and fixed it. Can't tell you how because there is no
rhyme or reason to it. I would remove the card, boot up to safe mode. Remove
all software and instances in the system proerties of anything to do with
sound cards. Leave the card out and reboot. Reinstall DirectX through the
windows update/ installed updates and then reboot. Go to the start menu and
type in regedit and go to the edit column on top and select search. Do a
search for Diamond and MX400 and Aureal and remove most, if no all keys. If
you are not sure leave it there but it may not work. If you have Norton
System Works you can avoid that by doing a scan, which will remove all
entries not needed. Reinstall the card and reinstall software and it may
work, notice I said may. (-:

I've had similar problems with the game port on Creative sound
cards..............so it is possible for the sound to work fine, and not the
game port.

There is a joystick test program available the lets you test the port from
dos. It is a great way to check out a port and it's functionality. Go to

Gameport question

I 've had the same problem and it turned out to be Windows not assigning the
correct I/O addresses.  In device manager/resources, make sure that it is
using at least I/O's 0201-0207, and not just 0201-0201 and 0207-0207.

Good luck,
