Which 3dfx?

Nascar2 is about the only computer game I play regularly.  Should I but a
Voodoo or a Voodoo2 #D card?  I have a 233MHz Pentium MMX with 32 Meg RAM.
Thanks.

If your not planning on upgrading your computer any time soon go with the
Voodoo 1 and save some money

If you settle on a Voodoo1, get a 6MB card (Canpus Pure3D is one such card).
You will need the extra texture memory to run lots of cars.  I have a P2/333
with a Monster 1 and run 8 cars ahead with 3 behind.  You can turn off the
stands/billboards and stuff to get more cars, but I'm just saying it like it
is: The more memory the better :)

Although I am a major 3Dfx supporter/user, I also run a Rendition card
(for Indycar2 & Nascar 2), and I would recommend a Rendition card to you
instead of a 3Dfx card.  The Rendition runs Nascar2 a lot better than
the 3Dfx (the 3Dfx is only a beta patch and will never be improved
upon), IMHO the colors are a lot sharper/purer with a Rendition card and
Nascar2.  With your system, you have plenty of power to ensure a
constant 30fps in Nascar2 with a Rendition card.

Suggestions:

Rendition V1000 (original chip) - Screamin' 3D (sold under Sierra name,
mf'd. for them by Canopus).  I put one in a buddy's system a couple
months ago, got it for $59.

Rendition V2100 (2nd gen.) - Diamond Stealth II - going for a cheap
price (~$70), plus there's a $20 rebate on.

Rendition V2200 (2nd gen.) - Faster version of the latest Rendition
chip.  Found in the Hercules Thriller baord, and for an economy model,
try the Genoa Raptor card.  You can often find this card for sale at the
on-line auction site, www.onsale.com, for very cheap prices.  Not
clocked as fast as the Hercules board, but you can always overclock the
Raptor to the same level.

Or you can just get a Voodoo 2 and wait for NASCAR 3 to come out... :-)  I see
you dont have a p2 though, so unless you were going to upgrade soon, a 1st gen
Voodoo may be a better choice... then again, if you get a Voodoo 2, you are
investing in the future...

The problem with Rendition is that really only Sierra games support it and as
such unless you ONLY play Papy sims then you may as well skip the Rendition
cards. You can get a no-brand 3dfx card based on the reference design for
under 100 pounds or dollars (pound price usually = dollar price) and they'll
do you proud for most games.

If you have an AGP port on your motherboard I can recommend a G200 for D3D
titles or waiting for the Banshee chipset cards (PCI) to hit the streets for
D3D and Glide compatibility as they offer stunning 2D and 3D performance. I
upgraded to a G200 from a Riva 128 and am still boring my friends about the
quality of the card :)

In conclusion if you want Glide compatibility get a cheap Voodoo card but if
you want excellent D3D, get one of the new generation "combo" cards.
