Graphics Card Thoughts

Hi all
I am going to upgrade my computer and the Graphics card combos are
giving me head aches. Depending on which shop I ask I get told different
things.
Basically I have a ***2d card so I will either be opting for an all in
one card like the Stingray or going for a sepate 2d card and a 3d card
something like a Matrox Mystique or a Orchid. Can any one tell me in
their experiences what would be the best way to go?
Thanks

The way i see it, u should buy a good 2d card, like the Diamond Stealth
3D 2000 Pro or an ET-6000 board with either the M3D or the R3D...that's
around $400-420...u'll spend the same amount on a 4MB MM anyway...

I'd suggest a 3DFX card (Diamond Monster/Orchid Righteous...) paired
with any card using the Tseng ET6000 chipset. They are cheap and fast.
The only drawback (and this may be a biggie for you) is that you can't

run accellerated Papyrus sims with the 3DFX... The 3D versions are
only for Rendition based cards.
I own both, and while I like racing sims a LOT, the Rendition card
just didn't work for me as an all around card.
I don't want to anger any of the race simmers here, but having seen
the Rendition and 3DFX performance difference in Direct 3d versions
of Flying Corps and Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries, the Rendition is
really lacking in D3D performance.
I'm also still a little leary of the Hercules Stingray, mainly because
support is so slow. One of the 3DFX pages says there are still only 5
titles for the Voodoo cards that will work on the Voodoo Rush cards.
New drivers are supposed to fix this, but they seem to be taking
forever to be released.

You're killin' me. See my stupid e-mail name? I live for dirt bikes :)

Don't buy the Stingray if you want to run NASCAR2!

I have had no Problems running with the Stingray card. Infact going from a
1mb 64 bit card the 128 bit 2D side of the Stingray improved my Nascar2
framerate significantly even with out UniVBE support. Of course you do have
to unconfig the UniVBE or it wont work.

I'm happy with a Matrox Millennium w 4mb WRAM and an Orchid R3D. The
Matrox should be going down in price since the Millennium II has been
released. For now, it's $197 US at NECX. I've recently seen the R3D for
$169 US. This setup is expensive and a voodoo Rush card would seem to be
the way to go. However, I use the computer for work as well as play and
I'm really satisfied with the Matrox Millennium for Windows 95 software.
However, if money is no object, then I'd go with a Matrox Millennium II
with 8 mbs of WRAM and an R3D. :)

I too am very happy with a Millenium and an Orchid Righteous. A fine buy.

I can't quite understand why you would want 8MB on a graphics card unless
you have a 26 inch plus monitor. Fine if the RAM is being used for
textures or something, like on a 3d card, but most cards don't need so
much unless you need 24bit colour at silly resolutions...
