Putting Jackie Stewart into GPL--here's how

Sure, but why stop there?  How about Reims, Brno, Solitude,
Bremgarten, Dundrod, Clermont-Ferrand, Brands Hatch, and all of the
other circuits we'll never get to see otherwise?  It'll happen,
eventually, whether it's Papyrus or the group being led by Paul Hoad,
to design a GPL track editor.  It'll happen...check out:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

This is easy.  The driver info and AI is contained in the driver.ini
file.   Just type the name and hometown, in the appropriate fields
(Milton, Scotland, BTW), and edit the AI values to heart's content.
The name then appears in the game in correct fashion.  I wrote over
"Chris Irwin" myself.  I also copied Clark's AI for Stewart, and, with
a bit of modification, looking at the other drivers' AI, have achieved
a happy compromise.  Stewart generally qualifies in the top five, and,
if his BRM lasts, finishes in the points.

The existing AI values appear to run from 0.980000 to 1.050000.
Experiment with different amounts in between, to find out what works
best for you.  There are several categories--experience, quickness,
aggression, qualifying, etc.  The strangest appears to be "hype"--not
sure what that is, but it correllates to the global hype scale factor,
which is particularly strange.  For Clark, it is .05, and for
uncompetitive drivers, is more like .8 or .9.  This range was not
realistic, IMO, as some drivers were finishing 10 or more laps behind
the winner.  A more realistic range, it seems to me, is .05 to .15 or
2. Again, experiment and see what suits your fancy.

Or you can just copy these values into the driver.ini file (the ones
I've used):

[ driver_14 ]
team_number = 1                                 ; team_number
team_order = 1                                  ; team_order

Note, this will not put Stewart's picture into the game...

You can also move drivers around from team to team, by assigning them
appropriate "team numbers"--just look at this field in the driver.ini
file for each driver and you'll figure out which number corresponds to
which team.  The problem with this is that, while the driver will
definitely appear on the right team, his new mount won't have his name
on the side, or, for some reason, a number....go figure.

Cooper and Honda can be put into the game as well.  A fellow at:
http://www.racesimcentral.net/; has done just that.  Easy file to download
and install.  The logos have not been put in yet, however.

I'm looking for a McLaren, myself, to write in instead of the Honda.

Solitude would be very nice, as it is just 2 miles away from here. ;-)

It features a Hatzenbach-like section called Mahdental, but with  8
oder 9 S-curves, all looking alike, but with different speeds, and
with view-limiting trees nearby. Phil Hill once said that this was
more difficult than the Ring, because one could hardly remember all
these esses precisely.
Also, there is a very steep uphill right hand turn, like Ex-Muehle,
just bigger, or like Eau Rouge, followed by a even steeper hill climb,
then a fast section plus a nice fast downhill turns. Should be pretty
good to race without those 40 or  50mph speed limits ...
Last year, a short connecting piece of the track at Frauenkreuz (and
Dreispitz <sp?> ?) was closed and trees were planted there, so the
complete original track does not exist anymore. :-(
Two years ago, they celebrated an anniversary there, with the F1 and
F2 Porsches that raced there in the early 60s, plus Hans Herrmann
driving the LeMans-winning 917.
