It is kind of a big hassle, but try www.gamecopyworld.com and search for GTL
nocd.

For my racing rig the pc isn't very accessible, fortunately GTL is the
only one that needs the DVD hence it isn't a problem. If say rFactor
needed a DVD I'd be frustrated.
Maybe an online check option would be better for those not wishing to
swap DVDs. User can choose between DVD or online verification at startup.

There are various levels of SF protection. It's up to the publisher what
level they want to use. From what I can tell, GTL uses the maximum level
which hasn't been cracked without disabling dvd drives (can be done via
software but it's a bit hit and miss)
It was done for Nascar Racing Season 2003. The hacked version is 5.11MB
versus 4.67MB for the regular version. If someone is willing to invest the
time, then a no-cd hack can be done, by removing all checks, and adding any
code that is generated by the check.
That one didn't have Starforce.

True, but rather than work around the copy protection, the patch simply
disabled all the copy protection references, and included extra code
that was generated / created by the copy protection scheme.
Sounds great but unfortunately nobody has ever managed to make a no-CD for a
Starforce3 game protected with the maximum level of protection. Feel free
to be the first - I'm sure you'll be hailed as a cracking legend!

There is a similar anti feeling against Steam, such that there is an
online petition against it:

Personally I ignore it all and have Half Life2 complete with Steam and
GT Legends complete with Starforce. I haven't had any issues with
either. I prefer the Steam approach but either way I wouldn't let it
stand in between deciding whether to buy a racing sim or not.

I saw a nonsensical post above about "not owning" a SF encrypted game but
the reality is you will always be able to use it as long as you take care of
the CD/DVD. Big difference IMO.
I prefer SF over Steam anyway. At least the ball is in YOUR court and not
reliant on some company that may or may not be here in the coming years.
