                        Hey !

I bought NFS a few months ago and because of my really slow CD-ROM I want to play it
from the Harddisk .
The problem is that I dont want to copy everything to the HD so if theres a way to
leave out the damn videos and carspecs (power, speed etc.) then please post it into
this area .

MANY THANKS !!!!!!!

Ok, my cd contains about 580 megs of data.  If you run the program with
tnfs sbpro novideo     ( or sb16 or gus, etc)
then you can safely remove most of the movie files in the movie
directory.  Be careful not to remove the ea.tgv and title.tgv as these
are needed for the opening logos.
This act should remove about 330 megs as there are lores and hires copies
of the video on the cd.  Also, in many of the directories you will find
german specific filenames which are similar to the english filenames, but
have a G at the end. e.g. Diablo and DiabloG, etc.  These can be deleted
for english play.  This should remove the German voiceovers.  I think
that saves another 30 or so meg.
I have already made a pruned copy which I played on a laptop when I went
on the road.  Don't flame me for piracy, because I took my original CD
with me in case I got near a desktop pc!  The pruned copy was about 60
megs, but that included hex editing the tnfs.exe file to chop the music
nd slides and dashboards.  Speaking of which, there are copies of the
dash in high and lowres.  If you only use lores, you can safely delete
the hires files.

The only reason I recommend you do this, is to take advantage of the
speed of your hard disk, especially if you have a double/single speed
cdrom.  Please do not use this information to illegally play N4S as it is
a very polished product and the more sales it gets, the more chance there
is of data disks coming out with more cars/tracks etc.

Bear in mind though, that this game is one of the few where the cosmetics
actually *add* to the experience of owning it.  I have seen pirated
versions of n4s on the net and these guys have *no* idea what they are
missing in terms of the presentation of the full game.

Just doing what I told you above is *not* enough to make the game work,
but I feel, with the knowledge gained by owning the product(installation
guide, etc), you should be able to make it work.

Hope this helps.

Is this possible? I also own a LEGAL version of the game on cd-rom, and have on
one occasion indeed try to copy the entire disk to my HD to speed-up the loading
(not necessary anymore 'cause I've bought a quicker CD-Rom now)

I found that they've actually built in a pretty nifty copy protection. Copying
everything to your harddisk works just find, but when I ran the game from a
SUBST drive the car's speed was limited to about 50 miles tops! Nice protection
guys! It was a lot of fun.

Concerning running Need for Speed without the CD, if you are running
into the 50mph speed limit after copying everything down to the hard
drive (and jumping through several drive letter assignment hoops) simply
flagging the files Read Only should take care of the problem.

The purpose of this information is NOT for playing an illegal copy of
the game.  NFS is an excellent game and well worth the $45........
