Need for Speed (without CD?)

Need for Speed (without CD?)

I just picked up Need for Speed last night. This is a great arcade game.
Lots of fun for modem play.

The only thing I don't like is it requires the CD to play. I don't like
to have to use the CDs to play games. The kids tend to be too rough on
them.

Does anyone know how to play the game without having to put the CD in?

Anyone have the answer to this?

Regards.

It's just a guesstimation but I reckon if you custom installed
it, checking ALL the boxes (installing every component) BUT
turning OFF the VIDEO (so it doesn't look for CD when you first
load it), this may work.  I don't have enough room on my HD to
try this but it may work...

I know the game has been "ripped" by piraters..  was like 48 disks or
something like that..  When you isntall, i suppose you could select everything
to be copied to the hdrive, and try that.. perhaps use fakecd to trick it into
thinking the cd is there when it isn't?

If you turn off the video on installation, you can install the whole
thing on about 150 megs of space.  To get it to run, however, you have
to edit the paths.dat file with a hex editor.  You basically have to go
in this file and change the references from your CD to the location of
the particular files on your HD.

My CD was getting unreadable due to some scratches etc, the videos get a
bit old after a while, anyhow.
