Dmn right we do.

Is it because we don't produce anything much of our own - I think that North
Sea Oil is not really suitable for 'cracking' down to petroleum.

Over in the States, they've got Texas - you know the big place with the long
strait road and lots of OIL. I guess it makes some difference to gas prices
(cheaper) when you can control how much you produce.

Joke for you:

Why did the Irish (or Polish if un the US) get potatoes and the Arabs get
oil?

The Irish (or Poles) had first choice.

No offence intended  |-).

Hehe - I guess I've had other things on my mind recently...
Ok, I found a receipt.  I paid $1.79 on 5/31.  I didn't even realize it was
THAT much(credit card).  I paid $2.15 yesterday morning...Sheesh.  Although I
found out why the price went up.  Some pipeline in Michigan burst, spilling a
bunch of oil...

The prices, actually, should be high everywhere. Environmental issues,
the impending exhaustion of natural reserves, the rising 'green'
consciousness in us and so on, have forced the prices upward, and they
will go in the same direction until we run out of oil or come up with
something cheaper to use. Taxation plays a part here - the oil companies
are (I understand) very nicely in leash. Gas also doesn't seem to have
quite as big an importance here as it does across the Atlantic. Our
attitudes towards eg. private cars is much more economical and less
obsessive than 'theirs'.

The big difference is due to US people having gotten so spoiled from
ridiculously low gas prices that they'll start rioting if the prices
are raised. A suggestion in that direction from anyone would mean a
political suicide.

Now, when the inevitable happens and the natural reserves are exhausted
forever, USA will be either falling from very much higher than Europe,
or then they'll wage war against the rest of the world to get hold of
their last oil storages. I'm not sure which is more probable.

Now this one loses me for some reason.  I grasp the taxation issue.  I
read earlier it is 87% in the UK!?!  My goodness, that's terrible!  But
if I'm paraphrasing you correctly, you're implying that by giving the
Oil Companies a bigger Profit, that somehow that'll help the
environment.  On the one hand, if I want to go somewhere, I'm going
regardless of cost.  It's just a matter of how much it'll end up costing
me.  On the other hand, there is no reason *any* product should cost
more than the Producer's Cost + *reasonable* profit margin (arbitrary, I
realize) + government-imposed tax burden.  Anything over that is nothing
more than theft.  How will giving them suits an even ungodlier amount of
profit be good for the environment?  I will never try & justify any
company for any sort unjust profiteering.  I'm just as environmentally
*aware* as the next guy, but throwing money at these particular Robber
Barons is a waste.  At the tax rates here in Michigan, I still say
anything over about $1.10-1.25 a gallon is profiteering.  Add your
local/national tax burden to that price & that's all YOU should have to
pay.  Anything over that and we're not doing anything for the
environment, we're just padding the Fat Cats.

Hopefully, what will happen is that we will finally wake up and switch to
Methanol instead of burning gasoline. This should have happened 75 years
ago, but the oil companies have a financial ***hold on the governments
of the world.

In the USA, as little as a year ago, the price of gasoline as indexed to the
cost of living was actually cheaper than it had been in 40 years.

One reason for this could be the relative size of the countries.  The USA,
which we may freely cross without any border or customs checks, is 3000+
miles across.  It makes sense that effective personal transportation would
play an important role.

Politicians don't raise gas prices, they raise gas *taxes*.  The USA has a
history of not being appreciative when politicians levy excessive,
self-serving taxes and I can't say I blame us.

Since the complete exhaustion of of natural reserves is so far in the
future, I woldn't worry too much about fossil fuels being the only viable
means of powering automobiles at that time.  People are working on
alternatives, but the truth is that the internal combustion engine remains
the most efficient use of energy for this purpose to date.

We better don't wait with alternative energy sources until the very
last second, or some really bad situations will develop...

I hope all those great politicians out there <G> will have enough
vision to prevent this.

I expect we'll all be well and comfortably dead by then.  The internal
combustion automobile will be a quaint anachronism by then, too.
Relegated to parades and museums.

Yeah, they're *supposed* to be.  Judging by the # of potholes I gotta
dodge everyday, I'd say we're all due a rebate!<G>

Thx, but too late I'm afraid, I had lots of good ideas, but due to the
