GPL rabbits and the 'Ring

Something I realised when attempting the 'Ring for the nth time in an
attempt to cut my GPLRank handicap was that none of the set-ups are suitable
for anyone as far off the pace as I am. I checked the tyre temperatures for
example and found the rears were barely warm. What I'm attempting (without
too much success) is a set-up that is much more controllable at the cost of
ultimate grip. As well as dropping the rear tyre pressures I've raised and
softened the suspension and pushed the brake balance forward. I even tried
the diff settings in an attempt to reduce the understeer when putting the
power on when travelling too slowly in a corner (with even less success -
I'll have to go back and read up on that). I now have a car (the Ferrari)
that slides more than Alison Hine's original settings but which I can at
least catch sometimes. So far it hasn't led to any consistency in actually
getting round the track without at least one major "Oh ***!" but I shall
persevere.

Tony, I can't advise you on set-ups, but if you're reasonably comfortable
with what you've got, it looks to me like a practice issue.  If you can do
3:19 at Spa, you should be under 8:30 at the Ring.  I'm no ringmeister, but
I'm chipping away at 8:30, and still can't get 3:20 at Spa.

I guess, um, keep on truckin'

Kurt

Have you given any of my setups a try?

They are very different to those of just about everyone else on schubis....
most find them a lot more drivable because I aim for realism rather than
speed in the setup.

The lotus setups on schubis is my latest and best .... and even though the
setups for the other cars (particularly ferrari) are very dated and could be
much improved they should still be better htan most of what you have tried.

I also have a recent cooper setup which is pretty much as good as the lotus
one ..... but more interestingly for you I have made a cooper setup
specifically with people in the 8m20 - 9m00 range in mind...

If you would like to beta test it for me e-mail me at

If you try any of the setups on schubis, just add 1% to the brake bias and a
touch extra rear toe and it should be relatively drivable :)

keep us up to date with how you get on :)

What? No magic solution? ;-) It's just that I'm s o o o far off the pace and
don't feel as if I'm racing, just driving round trying not to have an
accident.

That's what I thought... I can comfortably race low 3:20's at Spa but can't
complete more than 1 lap of the 'Ring. I know where all the turns are and
how fast I can go round them (I think) but putting it all together even once
seems an impossible dream.

A truck? Now there's an idea. Should last longer when hitting the barriers,
banks, hedges...

No 'Ring practice for a while, I've got to work for a living.
