Spudgun,

You are correct about one thing, there wasn't a Loews Hotel in that part
of Monaco in 1967 and the tunnel then was much shorter in length than it
is now.  As far as what the tunnel looked like in 1967, the only source
I have on this is the movie "Grand Prix" which was filmed in 1965.
Though I'm sure the GPL rendering isn't exact, my recollection is that
it's reasonably close.

D T:

Go to http://gpl.gamestats.com/ and click on "Pictures" in the frame off to
the left.  Then you will see a menu with an option for screenshots from
GPL's Monaco track.  Select that option and you will be presented with
several thumbnail screenshots.  Scroll down until you find the two or three
that are of the tunnel and click on each of them in turn.

Cheers,

Is that really how the tunnel looked in 67? It was totally different. I
assume it's before the Loews hotel was constructed?

Is "what" how the tunnel looked?
What image are you referring to?

The mouth of the tunnel was arced...it wasn't "stepped", as Papyrus have
depicted it, if that's what you are talking about.
The lights, both at track level and higher up, are depicted correctly.

The actual internal height of the tunnel is not as great as Papyrus have
shown it.

Sorry, Mark, but it was filmed *after* the start of the 3.0 litre era,
which commenced in 1966.
The movie was shot during 1966 and released in 1967.

I'm referring to all the images of the tunnel in GPL.

What was there a tunnel there for originally? And when they knocked it
down to build the hotel, there must have been a bit of a furore.

Bruce,

How do you explain that Clermont-Ferrand, the 1965 French GP, was
featured in "Grand Prix" if the movie was filmed in 1966?  I don't
believe they raced another GP at Clermont-Ferrand until 1969.

The current location of the Lowes Hotel was originally occupied by the
Railway Station. I know that the Railway Station was present for the 1964
race, but gone by 1966 (don't know whether it was still stanging for 1965).
In any case, I assume that the road/tunnel travelled under the Railway
Station and/or  a short section of train tracks before 1966, then when Lowes
was built, the tunnel was necessarily lengthened.  Does anybody have any more
definite info?

John Frankenheimer (the director) chose the Clermont-Ferrand track
because he liked it more than the Reims track which was used in '66.
That decision came through the artistic freedom of the movie's director.
The movie was DEFINETELY shot in 1966.
