Hi,

my German is not as good as it used to be, but I think I hear the
commentator saying something about 'the first time ... hardware
accellerated version', when he's taking the second corner just before
the *** section. Is he saying that the first showing of the
D3D-version was this one, or that it has yet to be shown? I'm not sure
about the graphics being hardware accellerated, but they do seem
surprisingly fast and fluid (this to many a GP2-player's satisfaction
:-)

Thanks in advance.

The German guy is indeed saying it is the direct3d version. He also
commented the team were planning on implementing a form of dynamic weather.

In his own words he's got gear and braking help on and I hope it's pretty
obvious from the contact with the Jordan he's got indestruct on as well (if
it's not I'm going to cry). He also says you need to be real precise with
the steering which would indicate he's not got steering help on and this
mode is vastly improved. No steering help in GP2 took more practise than
he's likely to have had with the game at this presentation.

The guy shown driving the simulator at the beginning of the mpeg is
Microprose producer Nick Court.

It was at a toy fair in Nuernberg, and it was the first showing of the
3D
accelerated version.

I think, I watched that little movie at least 20 times... ;^P

Thanks, I thought he said something like that (what is the word he's using?
something like 'nurwegenwings'... He's got some kind of southern German accent
I can't figure out exactly)

But this is exclusive news! The first D3D-version wasn't supposed to be
available to the public until the Australian GP! Now I'm wondering what the
images shown on ***Net UK looked like, as people who saw those commented on
them as being 'a 1000x better as the GameZone video' (F1-GRANDprix.net).

I think that if you look carefully at the bottom of the steering wheel you can
see all help-buttons lit green. He must have had indestructability on...

I thought he said cornering wasn't easy because he had braking help on...
again, can't figure out the word he's saying just after he's talking about gear
and breaking help. Something like 'wirklich', which would prove your
explanation right, but I thought it had something to do with what he was saying
before that. Could be wrong, though...

I think it was John Cooke who you could see in the intro, by the way (I could
understand _that_ from the commentator, at least :-)

Must admit that the commentary sounds a lot like he's talking while driving,
not a good combination in his case :-)

Here's a transcript (translated, can't write German to save my life) as I understand it.

<transcript>
Well, we're on s/f at Monaco and I'm going to try my hand at a two lap race against 3 competitors.

<revs engine and launches>

Whoops, some wheelspin but otherwise an ok start and in a flash we're at St. Devote. Now we climb towards *** and what's immediately obvious, with respect to it's 3-year old predecessor, is the better visuals, which are shown here, for the first time, in the nicer, 3-D accelerated version.

Now we're in the "esses" at Loews and, after just a few kilometers, it's fascinating to note the great handling feel, even better than that of it's predecessor. And the cars, eventhough I have auto-gears and braking help turned on, are really difficult to get around corners and one has to be real precise on the steering.

We'll pass this first guy into the tunnel.... that went really well.... now the Jordan at the harbour chicane... oooops.... first try... oh, he's having none of it... aye, it's getting ugly... now then... no, still no go... again... and... oww! -yes, yes and we've passed!! Ehm... that was an indication of ehm... Microprose including some white knuckle stuff. They've included and extensive damage model which allows the cars to completely break apart and even.... ooops we've gotten really crossed up....  flip.

After this "interlude" you have to negociate this really difficult Rascasse turn, which is very narrow and we've already completed our first lap at Monaco.

In my opinion, on the 3.5km we've just driven we got some indication of the immersion this game offers <he literally says "race fascination this game carries across" -Jan> and that's the essence of GP3. Add to that the Microprose hallmark of extensive setup options, which allows to the player to adjust every detail of the car to suit the track <duh!! -Jan>. Completely new is the fully developed weather system which allows the conditions to dramatically change during the course of a race.

If Geoff Crammond succeeds in including all promised features by June we're looking at a real corker come early summer. <he literally says "a real race game talent" -Jan>.
</transcript>

This guy has a very thick accent indeed. Then again, dialect seems to be all the rage in German popular media nowadays (ever watch DSF on Astra??).

As for the guy shown in the***pit... there's a picture of him in PC Gamer which says he's Nick Court, so either these guys are twins and don't know it or one of our sources is wrong (or I need glasses ;-)).

F1-2000 dropped this :(  GP3 looks AND SOUNDS incredible.  Could be a
heated battle for the hearts of F1 simulation racers.  I have to admit,
though, I'm getting very e***d about the end of this month.
