GP2 - Can I really use a joystick?

by Terrance Xavi » Sat, 25 May 1996 04:00:00

I was wondering how the car in GP2 will respond if I am playing with a
joystick instead of a wheel and pedal system (Formula T2)?

In ICR2, when I need to brake, I just hold down one of the buttons on
the joystick until the car comes to almost a complete stop and then
accelerate again. From what I hear about GP2, you can actually lock up
the brakes. If I do the same thing in GP2 (hold down the brake button
for a couple of seconds) will I lock up my wheels?

When using a joystick, you can't really have variable brake control or
its very hard to just *slightly* press down the joytstick button
halfway. With the T2, you can have varying degrees of braking.
I hope I'm making sense here since I don't want to be in a spin out
everytime I brake in GP2!

Thanks.

Don't know yet about GP2, but in ICR2 you can reassign the braking
to the joystick's Y-axis. Then you do not need to press a button
to brake (which is BREAK-NOBREAK), but can pull backwards the
joystick to brake (and thus have variable brake control).

The same applies to the throttle, where you can then push the
joystick forward (and have variable throttle control).

This is exactly the way I have my j/s set up for ICR2. Variable brake
control does work this way by pulling the j/s back to apply brakes.
Impossible if you use a j/s button to brake.

GP2 allows for TOTAL control of the way the sim reads your input device.
Programmable and adjustable everything. Joystick should work just fine.

Cheers!

I hope you can lock-up - this sort of thing Papyrus has NOT got right at
all. I find ICR2/Nascar weakest when driving a car hard in and out of
corners on road courses.....perhaps this reflects the interests of the
developers (and most posters in this conference) in that fast cornering
on ovals such as Michigan or Talledega is more interesting than handling
a car around Laguna or the Glen.

TX> When using a joystick, you can't really have variable brake control

Why not try using the joystick with accelaration on the forward axis and
braking on the rear.....put reverse gear on the keyboard. This gives you
a fairly good degree of control of both pedals. It doesn't allow you to
do both together.....but there seems to be no simulation of left-foot
braking in the sims either and the Papyrus accelarator pedal
definitely seems to be a "forward speed" measure rather than one of
engine revs/power output.....so this is probably about right.

Cheers!

That's not always easy.  I remember trying that with Bill Elliott's Nascar
Racing.  I finally ended up using the keyboard... :(

You sure can !

If you use an _ANALOGUE_ joystick !!!!

Digital joystick (button-'sticks') are for KIDS/CONSOLE's

This is autos.simulators and NOT console.nintendo.racegame !!!

We are talking about car SIMULATORS on REAL computers !!

Analog joysticks STILL have ON/OFF button switches.  He's probably using the
buttons for accel/brake, and one joystick axis for steering.  Now if you had
told him to use the other joystick axis as accel/brake, you would have been
helping.  As it was, you jumped all over the guy for asking a simple question.

Wrong answer.  Bad dog.  No biscuit.
