GP2 quirks after using 97carset and gp2 Editor?

by Praveen Isl » Thu, 23 Jan 1997 04:00:00

I have installed the following files/patches to my full installation
of GP2:

(1) nocdrom.zip
(2) Pieter's 97 Carset V 2.2b
(3) GP2 Editor V2.12

The nocdrom.zip file patches GP2 so that it does not seek the CD-ROM
and patched GP2 to V1.0b.  The 97 Carset updates drivers, helmets,
cars,***pit colors, tires, etc.  Its a great carset.  I have used
GP2 Editor to alter the distance of the quickrace, and removed the pit
lane speed limit, failure rate, grip, and some other things.... But
what I have noticed is that after finishing a race, the game will not
end becuase there is a driver who is either in the sand or against a
wall that is stuck between 1st and power turn gear.  This car doesn't
move at all and until you either crash into him or you move him to
another location and then finally a marshall will pull him off of the
track.  Until you do this the game will not end, even if you use
accelerated time.  A friend of mine who has installed the same three
files has the identical problem.  Have any of you ran into this
quirk/bug?

Thanks
PI

Yes. I have the same. It is very annoying.
I just installed the game from scratch and said *** it
to these add ons.

Hi,

>someone who's in the know, please post which of the 3 might or is

It's a combination of the patches together.
My carsets work fine on a clean GP2.EXE.

GP2 quirks after using 97carset and gp2 Editor?

I had some problems myself when I was working out the details of
my 1993 carset.  After I'd changed every car's horsepower ratings to '93
levels, at least one of the drivers would also get stuck in a sandtrap
-flicking constantly between power turn and first gear (or neutral- for
the duration of the entire race.  Alarmed by this, I dropped each car's
output by 30bhp and the craziness stopped.  I'm not absolutely sure if
changing horsepower is the true culprit in this occurrence.
As far as I know, most people have had nocdrom.zip work very well
for them.  Pieter's carsets should be innocent as well, as I've yet to
see a bad graphic file throw off the entire game.  However, Pieter
includes in his carsets the import/export file GP2EDEXP.EXE of GP2
Editor.
I hate to point fingers, especially when I'm pointing them at a utility
that works very well for me about 80% of the time.  GP2 Editor (even
V.2.12b) is pretty erratic and may/may not cause problems on any given
computer.  Just make sure you've got backups of the main program files -
i.e. your CD.  If you don't have the CD, then backup GP2.EXE.

Yes, I had a similar quirky reaction following the installation of the
97 car set.
On a few tracks one or more cars would be stalled on the grid, with
the result that on the first lap they were rear ended by the pack -
massive pile up.

I had to reinstall as well before I could install the patch. I don't
think GP2 likes being changed very much. Still you have to love Pieter
and PK's carsets. I don't think I'd still attempt to drive in the game
if it weren't for that new stuff and the ability to make my own ride.

GP2 quirks after using 97carset and gp2 Editor?

Actually I believe that this is one of the bugs in the game.  This will
usually cause the race to go on endlessly while the idiotic computer car
sits there in the sand switching gears.  The only way I know of to remedy
the problem is to turn on the "invincible" cheat (F4) after the race and
ram the hell out of the stuck car.  This will either break his car apart
and force him out of the race or it will jar him into action and he will
switch into first and take off.

I don't know about this...  In my experiences, "stupid driver
syndrome" occurs either many times in a row, or not at all.  I'm still
not sure as to what exactly triggers it, but if it happens to you once,
chances are that it will happen again until your GP2.EXE is changed.
Out of curiousity, did this happen to you with a clean GP2.EXE,
or after you'd installed a new carset?

i have had this with this with the 96 & 97 carsets from p.k.arnall,i
got round it by importing from the game into s.m youngs editor and
saving it as a .gp2 file and then re exporting it to gp2,either the
carsets are at fault or the editor itself (v2.21b incidently)
has slobodan blanusa any comments or mr arnall,by the way their
efforts are still very much appreciated and admired.

"Stupid driver sydrome" (a great name for it BTW) has happened to me in
both cases-right out of the box and with new carsets installed.  It seems
like it happens a lot more when there are multiple crashes in the race.
