Just for an update...
I built the box and it rocks!
I really had very little trouble, and I'm very thankful.
Esp. after hearing about other peoples problems.
The Abit KG7-Raid does NOT like RPM-reporting fans on its headers. It
caused "checksum error" at boot. Couldn't even get into the BIOS.
After I connected the fans directly to the power supply, it cleared up
everything.
Specs:
Win98SE
Abit KG7-Raid
Athlon 1600+ XP
Aplha PAL8045 HSF
Crucial DDR2100 2.5 256Mb
Gainward GeForce2 Ti/500 Golden Sample
IBM 7200rpm ATA100 20Gb
Enermax Whisper 350W
EIGHT! Enermax UC-8FAB rpm-controllable fans (very quiet even at max)
and a killer case - http://www.colorcomputercase.com/products/AT821.html
It's small, but has space for seven 80mm case fans and it's only $59.
I had to drill out a bad rivet and install a bolt, but for the money,
can't really complain.
Temps:
39/41 degC (Idle/Load)
31 degC case temp
Sisoft Sandra Scores: (I don't OC)
CPU: (Dry) 3904 / (Whet) 1947
CPU-MM: (Int) 7798 / (Fpu) 8973
Memory: (Int) 690 / (Fpu) 748
HD: 26439 (with no raid, on IDE 3)
Note: That HD speed blasts the Cheetah U2W SCSI LVD setup on my PIII
at 19756.
$1100 for the SCSI set-up versus $77 for the IBM ATA-100 drive and the
Abit mobo. BAM!
So far, so good. I'm using it as I "speak".
And finally, I can run SCGT full bore in a pack of cars!
Haven't loaded up GPL yet, but it ran pretty good on my
PIII/733/GeForce256.
No crashes or BSODs yet.
And all under $1000 at newegg. I paid $3000 for my Micron system two
years ago. Never again.
Oh yeah, and the day I built my system, my Act-Labs clutch replacement
pedals came! What am I doing writing this? I gotta go...
