Strange Colin McRae Rally problems

After anxiously waiting for a few months for the demo to be available, I
recently downloaded the demo of Colin McRae Rally for the PC.

When I am presented with the view out the front window of the car, I can
hear all the sound effects fine, the voices and countdown start ok, and
I can see the speedometer display and skid marks(?) on the road surface.
However every thing else is just a white screen. There are is no scenery
at all or any view of the road. I have tried all available combinations
of settings in the option menus and also switching resolutions and
colour depths on my desktop. I have read the README file and followed
all instructions for installation and video card selection. I even tried
selecting other display drivers with no luck.

I am running a PII 300Mhz with 96Mb of SDRAM, a Sound Blaster Gold
AWE64, an ATI All-in-Wonder-Pro 8Mb AGP (Rage Pro chipset), and a DEC
DE100 EtherWorks LC NIC.

The ATI driver is version 4.11.2453 Lonsdale-B37F) and DirectX 6.0 is
installed and functioning ok. I have several other "picky" games
installed that run fine, and there are no hardware conflicts of any
type. I have tried every thing I can think of, even downloading and
installing the patch from the Codemasters web site even though I don't
think it was meant for the demo. If any one has any ideas or needs more
information, please contact me.

Hi

I found that 'downgrading' from DirectX 6.0 to DirectX 5.0 works.... I read
somewhere that the problem sohould be fixed in DirectX 6.1 (whenever that
will be available)

I had the same problem but don't anymore ..... this game really roxx.

I too am having problems with the demo. My screen is blotchy with areas that
obviously contain info but are blank. I'll let you know if I can figure it out.
 Good luck.

If I used my 3DFX cards with glide 2.54 most of the screen was white, with
the Riva TNT it was fine. I went back to Glide 2.53 and then the 3DFX worked
fine. All of these were with DX6.0. As suggested by someone else you are
best trying some older drivers for the time being.

Same thing here.  Also happened in Viper Racing.  As soon as I loaded the
newer drivers 2.54, there was a white mist over everything as if the whole
scene was covered in fog white polygons.

I also have problems with running Colin McRae. At first the program worked
fine and suddenly it wont work well any longer. Big problems with the
graphics. I tried several modes in the graphic settings without any success.
Downgrading from DirectX6 to DirectX5 didnt help. Im running an 200MMX
with 64 MB mem and a Monster 3D card.

For the strange colors in CMR did help when I checked the checkbox
named "Color key" in my Apocalypse's setups. Now I do not remember
what it really means, but may be that you have a similar checkbox
in your Voodoo setups?? Well... maybe not, hope that someone can
give you a better hint to solve your problem.

Anyway, I was in the opinion that you _can_ make CMR to work in
a 133 MHz machine, but I do _not_ believe it is any driveable
anyway... If you get it working, tell here how is it?!

I could be way off track here with this comment, but you have selected
Device 1 in SETTINGS / GRAPHICS / ADVANCED / Display Device, haven't you?!
