The game seems extremely fun, but is plagued with problems. If you're
running XP, you need to install some new XP updates to get GTA3
working. On many systems (including mine) the game crashes back to
desktop after 20 seconds of gameplay. So far it seems to be causes
either by an SBLive conflict or because of the wonderfull SafeDisc(Tm)
Protection.

Lol.. a cracked gta3.exe has just been released which fixes the
back-to-desktop crashes. This cracked .exe, made for the warez
version, is also needed to fix the retail version.

Gotta love SafeDisc(Tm) :)

Runs fine without any new XP updates on my box. Ie, I only have
whatever is available through Windows Update installed, not the
stuff the readme mentions. Then again, it might have been include
in one of the updates for all I know.

A review at ISONEWS.com said its comparable to destruction derby 2, which
for an arcade game is quite good. Now when are they going to bring out a
game thats has the car addons/upgrades as motorcity, customisable engine as
Burnout/IHRA, single player or multi, with the physics of N2002, and the
same sort of gameplay of GTA3.. drive around and do jobs, or just go
cruising and pick up a few drags ;) Street Rood 2003??

Actually...I think GTA3 is going to be the next baby of the modding
community.  Player skins should be the first ones out since Rockstar
actually shows how to do it right off.  After that, the possibilities could
be endless...

I never thought of a Street Rod mod but that would be AWESOME!!!

Some others I was thinking of:
*Famous vehicle mod - Doc's DeLorean, KITT, the A-Team van, various
Batmobiles, McQueen's Eleanor, Cage's Eleanor, McQueen's 917...really, any
car that played any real role in a series...
*Jedi mod -yes, I am a geek.  It wouldn't be hard, really; turn the baseball
bat into a saber and reskin the player as a Jedi. ;)

It's nothing like Destruction Derby 2.. The physics model is no GPL
(duh :) but it's damn fun to drive the cars in an arcade type of way,
think Interstate '76 or the NFS series.
GTA3 is HUGE fun, the game is very open. You can hijack cars, earn
money by robbing people, completing numerous missions, or steal a cab
or fireman-truck and do some community service :)
I caused some serious rampage yesterday, police and police helicopters
were swarming all over the place to get me. Reminded me of some Blues
Brother scenes :)
In the later levels you will even get chased by SWAT teams, the FBI
and even the army with their tanks :)

The game still remains quite unstable though, I get a crash-to-desktop
every half hour or so.
Still, if you're into these type of games, this is a must-buy.

Exactly; maybe a good word to describe them is "believeable".  Not spot-on
100% realistic, maybe, but it's fun, and close to reality.  When you look at
how complex the game's concept alone is, it's almost shocking that they had
time to put together an engine as good as it is. The world is HUGE and there
are a LOT of missions.

Or steal a cop car / FBI car / SWAT van and take out criminals, Vigilante
style.  Uzi = fun. =)

I can see it now...a mod that replaces one of the cars with a beat-up early
'70's Dodge cop car...cop motor, 440 cubic inches, cop tires, cop shocks,
cop suspension...and changes one radio station to blues. ;)

And THEN it gets tough. Muahaha.

I actually haven't had a single problem with it yet *knock on wood* but then
again I update XP religiously.

I'm getting used to the controls, but I'm still seriously considering buying
a USB to Playstation2 adapter and plugging in a Dual Shock.  (I own / have
beaten almost 100% the game on PS2. =)
