Better yet - GPL2 - How?

I, for one, am really, really looking forward to SBDT's 1977 Formula 1
mode, but I'd still rather see something happen with a GPL 72, or
Sports Car Legends.

What, honestly, is the legal likelihood of Papy releasing the source
for GPL, or there being some way the programmers could do something
with the engine on thier own time?  Several developers have released
the source for some major products already (Doom, Quake, Descent
Freespace).

I mentioned it in passing, but would it really be possible for Dave K
(as one rumor has it) or Grant to develop the GPL core further and
release something independent of Papyrus/Sierra?  Like the D3D
renderer (which was a free side-project Grant did on his own).  I
worry that Sierra didn't care only because a) it wasn't really a
modification of the core code and b) it couldn't be considered a new
"product".  Dave K admitted in an interview that they'd already tested
a version of GPL with downforce - and this was quite a while back.

I think of the gobs of money the West's want for Racing Legends, and
think it would be much better going to building on the core of
GPL/N2002.

A few years ago, Papyrus gave away Indycar Racing free via a magazine.
But they never did relenquish the code.  I doubt you will see anything more
than that for GPL.

Zero. Zip. *** all.

GPL is the research footing for their N4, N2k2 and N2k3 series. They'd be
stupid to release it.

Except, of course, that they will soon have to foreclose their N4, N2k2,
N2k3 series....

You could have made a similar argument about Quake being the foundation
of Quake 2 and Half-Life, but that didn't stop Id from releasing the
source several years ago.

As for releasing the source code, I wonder if Papyrus is going to stay inthe
PC market or go to only console? If they go only console then maybe the
source code would be released or they could license other companies to use
the source  code like Id did and make a whole bunch more money.
